Source text - English What are the challenges facing the vaccine industry today? We are facing a paradoxical situation today - vaccines are by far the most effective healthcare intervention available to any country in the world. In spite of this the level of profitability of vaccine companies has been very low and the vaccine industry was not attractive to investors. The recent occurrence of global health threats like SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and avian flu (caused by H5N1 influenza virus) has had a beneficial effect since it has changed the perception of the US government and the general population to the risks and implications of possible future worldwide pandemics. National vaccine budgets have been increased substantially during the last two years and a number of private initiatives have injected considerable sums of money in vaccine development. Another positive development is the decision made by several countries to stockpile vaccine supplies purchased at a price that will encourage companies to undertake vaccine development. One result of this renewed interest is that outdated technologies, such as the production of influenza vaccine in embryonated eggs, will soon be replaced by modern fermentation processes that allow much faster vaccine production.
