French to English: Le tracteur Agrofarm General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Source text - French Le tracteur Agrofarm est équipé d’un moteur Deutz de 4,038 I. A l’usage, dans notre cas, pour tirer une herse de prairie, on note qu’il possède un faible frein moteur. La prudence est donc de mise dans les terrains à forte déclivité.
Côté entretien, le capot s’ouvre suffisamment pour faire l’entretien journalier. Les différents niveaux sont accessibles et le filtre à air s’ouvre facilement pour être nettoyé sans ôter les côtés latéraux. Les différents radiateurs sont fixes. Un tamis amovible situé entre les deux refroidisseurs protège le second des impuretés. Les filtres sont accessibles une fois les capots latéraux retirés. Ils sont regroupés à droite du moteur.
La transmission dispose de deux plages de travail sélectionnables via un levier au plancher. La plage « Travaux lourds » permet de se déplacer à des vitesses allant de 0,1 jusqu’à 24 km/h. La plage « Normale » permet d’avancer de 0,1 à 40 km/h. La gestion offre trois modes de conduite : automatique (mode par défaut au démarrage), prise de force et manuel. Pour la personne non initiée, il suffit au démarrage d’enclencher l’inverseur dans le sens qu’il souhaite et d’appuyer sur la pédale d’avancement pour rouler jusqu’à une vitesse limite de 10 km/h. Pour augmenter ou diminuer cette vitesse limite, le chauffeur doit agir sur la palette orange placée en bout d’accoudoir.
Le chauffeur peut mémoriser une vitesse d’avancement. Pour cela, il se positionne avec la pédale à la vitesse souhaitée et effectue un appui long sur le bouton « CVT » sur l’accoudoir. Un signale sonore confirme la mémorisation. Un appui court sur ce même bouton interrompt cette fonction de régulation. Un double clic, pas trop rapide pour être enregistré, la réactive. Une fois cette fonction enclenchée, l’opérateur peut modifier la vitesse mémorisée avec la palette orange.
Le mode manuel s’active lorsque le tracteur est au neutre en appuyant sur un bouton placé près du superviseur de régime. Dans ce mode de travail, le conducteur fixe son régime de travail avec l’accélérateur à main. La vitesse d’avancement se gère quant à elle avec la pédale.
Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que la cabine de l’Agrofarm ne brille pas par son espace intérieur. Seul, on se sent à l’étroit. A deux, on frise la claustrophobie ! Toutefois, la visibilité s’avère bonne, avec seulement quatre montants et le toit vitré de série. On retrouve aussi un pare-brise ouvrant. Cet équipement appréciable présente néanmoins un inconvénient. Lorsqu’il est ouvert, le champ de vision se trouve grandement réduit par le moteur d’essuie-glace.
L’accès à bord se révèle difficile pour certains. Mieux vaut avoir de grandes jambes car la première marche est haute. A l’intérieur, la finition s’avère de bonne facture, avec un accoudoir multifonction, ou encore la climatisation, qui fait partie des équipements.

The Agrofarm tractor is equipped with a 4.038 l Deutz engine. When used as a harrow-plough, as in this case, it has a poor engine break. Caution is therefore needed on terrain with a steep slope.
As far as maintenance is concerned, the bonnet can be opened up enough in order to carry out daily checks. The various fluid levels can be checked and the air filter can be easily opened to clean it without removing the side panels. The various radiators are fixed in place and a removable filter, situated between the two coolers, protects these from dirt. The filters are accessible by removing the side panels and the filters can be found on the right-hand side of the engine.
The transmission has two working ranges, which can be selected using a lever on the floor. The “heavy work” range enables the tractor to travel at speeds from 0.1 kmph to 24 kmph. The “normal” range enables the tractor to move at speeds from 0.1 kmph to 40 kmph. The engine control has three different driving modes: automatic (the default mode on start-up), power take-off and manual. For an inexperienced tractor driver, all it takes to drive at speeds of up to 10 kmph, is to engage the power shuttle in the desired direction of travel upon starting the engine and press down on the throttle pedal. In order to increase or decrease the maximum speed, the driver must use the orange group of controls situated at the end of the armrest.
The driver can also store a programmed speed. In order to do so, the driver must accelerate to the desired speed and then press the “CVT” button situated on the armrest for an extended length of time. A sound signal will confirm that the speed has been memorized. Pressing the same button briefly will cancel the speed control function. A steady double click on the same button, so that the system registers it, will reactivate the speed control. Once this function has been activated, the driver can modify the memorized speed by using the orange controls.
The manual mode is activated when the tractor is in neutral by pressing a button near the throttle control. In this mode, the driver sets the working speed with a hand throttle, whilst the tractor’s speed is managed using the foot pedal.
At the very least we can say that the Agrofarm’s cab does not stand out for its interior space. It feels cramped with just one person inside. With two of you inside the cab it verges on claustrophobic! Nevertheless, the visibility is good with only four posts in the cab, a standard glass roof and a windscreen that can be opened. This handy equipment does, however, have one drawback. When the windscreen is open, visibility is greatly reduced by the motor for the windscreen wipers.
Access into the cab is difficult for some people. It is easier if you have long legs, as the first step is high up. Inside the cab, the interior seems to be well made with a multi-function armrest, and even air conditioning included in the features.

Source text - French La Formation d’Oulad Hamida comprend 5 membres superposées et/ou emboités qui reposent sur une plateforme d’érosion développée vers 28m d’altitude NGM aux dépens du substrat crétacé ou paléozoïque.
Chaque Membre correspond à l’enregistrement d’un cycle sédimentaire ou séquence unitaire qui est caractérisée par un enchaînement vertical de faciès génétiquement liés, succession verticale et temporelle d’environnements sédimentaires intertidaux associés à un paléorivage, puis supratidaux et dunaires ou continentaux de versant. Cette séquence qui enregistre l’installation d’un haut stationnement marin, suivi du retrait de l’océan et de la continentalisation du littoral, est corrélative des variations de l’Océan mondial en relation avec les changements globaux et l’état d’englacement des hautes latitudes (Lefèvre, 2000).
La Formation d’Oulad Hamida est antérieure à la Formation d’Anfa dont les membres sont rapportés aux OIS 11, 13 et 15 (Lefèvre, 2000; Lefèvre and Raynal, 2002). Elle enregistre des variations de l’Océan mondial et des environnements, qui représentent au moins 5 cycles, à la fin du Pléistocène inférieur et au début du Pléistocène moyen, antérieurement à l’OIS 15.
Membre OH1 :
Bed 1 : calcirudite grossière à la base, biocalcarénite grossière litée ; environnements de dépôt intertidaux ;
Bed 2(Th-L) : succession sur 2 à 3m de bancs calcaires jaunâtres, lenticulaires, à stratifications entrecroisées, constitués de microséquences de mudstones, de sables à intraclastes et séparées par des surfaces d’émersion mis en place dans un hydrosystème continental fluvio-lacustre à chenaux divagants et plan d’eau temporaire, puis des sables éoliens pédogénisés. Dans les dépôts calcaires, le site Th-L présente plusieurs niveaux contenant des assemblages lithiques de l'Acheuléen ancien (Raynal et Texier, 1989 ; Raynal et al., 2001, 2002) ainsi que des restes de grands mammifères parmi lesquels domine Hippopotamus, accompagné de Gazella atlantica, Equus cf mauritanicus, Loxodonta atlantica (Geraads, 2002). La microfaune comprend, des Reptiles, des Amphibiens et des Rongeurs dominés par les genres Praomys, Paraethomys, Meriones et Gerbillus.
Plusieurs éléments permettent d’approcher l’âge du Bed 2 (Th-L). Éléments biochronologiques tout d’abord : les caractères évolutifs de la microfaune et en particulier des Rongeurs, placent l’assemblage faunique entre les faunes de l’Aïn Hanech et celles de Tighenif en Algérie (Sahnouni et de Heinzelin, 1998), c’est à dire dans la seconde moitié du Pléistocène inférieur mais vraisemblablement pas dans sa partie terminale (Geraads, 2002). Éléments géochronologiques ensuite : de polarité magnétique inverse (travaux S. Sen, in litteris), ces dépôts appartiennent à la chronozone de Matuyama (Cande et Kent, 1992), attribution en accord avec les résultats des premiers essais de datation par OSL qui fournissent un âge compris entre 0.8 et 1.2 Ma (Rhodes et al, 2006). Ces données, en particulier biochronologiques, permettent de situer la mise en place des calcaires du Bed 2 autour de 1Ma, date ronde, soit antérieurement soit immédiatement après à la subchronozone de Jaramillo, datée de 0,98-1,05 Ma (Cande et Kent, 1992).
Translation - English The Oulad Hamida Formation includes 5 overlying and/or channelled members sitting on an erosional platform, which formed at an altitude of around 28 m NGM (general levelling of Morocco) at the expense of the Cretaceous or Palaeozoic substratum.
Each member corresponds to the record of a sedimentary cycle or unit sequence characterised by a genetically linked vertical succession of facies: a succession of vertical and temporal sedimentary environments originating from hillslope processes, including intertidal sediments, which are associated with a paleoshoreline, followed by supratidal and dunal or continental sediments. This sequence, which records the formation of a high sea level followed by the retreat of the ocean and the continentalisation of the coast, is correlative of the variations in the World Ocean in relation to global changes and the extent of glaciation at high altitudes (Lefèvre, 2000).
The Oulad Hamida Formation predates the Anfa Formation, the members of which correlate to OIS 11, 13, and 15 (Lefèvre, 2000; Lefèvre and Raynal, 2002). The formation records variations in the World Ocean and its surrounding environment, which represents at least five cycles, from the Early Pleistocene to the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene, which predates OIS 15.
Member OH1:
Bed 1: Coarse calcirudite at the base and course, stratified biocalcarenite; intertidal depositional environments.
Bed 2 (Th-L): A 2 to 3 m succession of yellow lenticular limestone banks with cross-bedding structures, composed of microsequences of mudstones, intraclast sands separated by emergent surfaces formed in a continental fluviolacustrine hydrosystem with shifting channels and a temporary water table, followed by pedogenised aeolian sands. In the limestone deposits, the Th-L site presents several levels that contain lithic finds from the Early Acheulean period (Raynal and Texier, 1989; Raynal et al, 2001, 2002), as well as the remains of large mammals dominated by the remains of hippopotamus along with Gazella atlantica; Equus cf mauritanicus; Loxodonta atlantica (Geraads, 2002). Among the microfauna, there are reptiles; amphibians and rodents, predominantly the Praomys; Paraethomys; Meriones and the Gerbillus species.
A number of elements enable us to date Bed 2 (Th-L). Firstly there are the biochronological elements: The evolutionary nature of the microfauna, particularly that of the rodents, places this collection between the fauna from Aïn Hanech and those from Tighenif in Algeria (Sahnouni and Heinzelin, 1998). In other words, they date to the second half of the Early Pleistocene, but in all likelihood, not towards the later part of that period (Geraads, 2002).
Geochronological elements: These deposits, which have reversed magnetic polarity, (S.Sen's work, in litteris), belong to the Matuyama chronozone (Cande and Kent, 1992), an attribution consistent with the results of the first tests using OSL dating, which provide an age of between 0.8 and 1.2 Ma (Rhodes et al, 2006). This data, and in particularly the biochronological data, makes it possible to date the formation of the Bed 2 limestone to roughly 1 Ma (rounded up), which is either before or immediately after the Jaramillo subchronozone, dated to 0.98-1.05 Ma (Cande and Kent, 1992).

I graduated with a 2:1 BA Joint Honours in Archaeology and Ancient History/French Studies from the University of Birmingham in 2004. More recently I achieved a merit in the Principles and Practice of Translation (French-English) postgraduate certificate from London City University in 2012. I believe that continual personal development is important both for keeping up to date with the industry and to ensure that I carry on developing and expanding my skills.
