Source text - English In governing men and in serving Heaven, there is nothing like moderation. For only by moderation can there be an early return to man's normal state. This early return is the same as a great storage of Virtue. With a great storage of Virtue there is naught which may not be achieved. If there is naught which may not be achieved, then no one will know to what extent this power reaches. And if no one knows to what extent a man's power reaches, that man is fit to be the ruler of a State. Having the secret of rule, his rule shall endure. Setting the tap-root deep, and making the spreading roots firm: this is the way to ensure long life to the tree.
The skilful philosophers of the olden time were subtle, spiritual, profound, and penetrating. They were so deep as to be incomprehensible. Because they are hard to comprehend, I will endeavour to describe them.
Shrinking were they, like one fording a stream in winter. Cautious were they, like one who fears an attack from any quarter. Circumspect were they, like a stranger guest; self-effacing, like ice about to melt; simple, like unpolished wood; vacant, like a valley; opaque, like muddy water.
Translation - Persian (Farsi) در فرمان راندن بر انسان‌ها و در فرمان بردن از آسمان هیچ چیز مانند میانه‌روی نیست. زیرا که تنها با میانه‌روی می‌توان، زودهنگام، به جایگاه اصلی انسان بازگشت. این بازگشتِ زودهنگام همانند اندوخته‌ی بزرگی از ارزش‌هاست. با داشتن اندوخته‌ی بزرگی از ارزش‌ها، تنها «هیچ» است که نمی‌توان به دستش آورد. اگر تنها «هیچ» دست‌نیافتنی باشد، مرزهای چنین نیرویی را نمی‌توان شناخت. و اگر هیچ کس مرزهای نیروی یک انسان را نشناسد، آن کس برای فرمان راندن بر یک سرزمین شایسته است؛ چون راز نیرویش را با خود دارد، فرمانرواییش پایدار خوهد بود. ریشه باید ژرف در خاک جای گیرد، و ریشه‌های کوچک استوار شوند، تا بدانیم که درخت زمانی دراز خواهد زیست.
فیلسوفان برجسته‌ی زمان‌های کهن نکته‌بین، روحانی، ژرف و بانفوذ بودند. ژرفاشان آن قدر بود که درک‌ناپذیرشان می‌ساخت. از آن جا که درک ناپذیر بودند، می‌کوشم توصیفشان کنم: افتاده بودند، همچون کسی که بخواهد در زمستان از رودی یخ‌زده بگذرد. هشیار بودند، همچون کسی که از هر گوشه انتظار تهاجمی دارد. ملاحظه‌گر بودند، همچون میهمانی غریبه. فروتن، همچون یخ در آستانه‌ی ذوب شدن. ساده، همچون چوبِ پرداخت‌نشده. تهی، چون دره. کِدِر، چون آب گل‌آلوده.
