Translation - English Social Networks as a Mechanism of Identity Construction
Social ties do not constitute mere channels of access to and/or distribution of resources, even in society's poorest groups. As one of the aforementioned papers (Robison et al., 2003) points out, all personalized exchanges include elements of an emotional nature, that may even modify the value of the goods exchanged.
From this perspective, social networks can also be seen as mechanisms that construct representations and identity. Bourdieu's contributions are classic in this sense, when he points out that "exchange transforms the things exchanged into signs of recognition and, through the mutual recognition and the recognition of group membership which it implies, reproduces the group and, by the same token, reaffirms the limits of the group." The identity experience involves subjective and objective aspects, a social situation and a personal history, but also a network of relationships, where one's own place is determined in relation to the other and in contrast to him. Therefore, reflecting on the content of the interactions and on other interactions that could be taking place but are not allows us to understand to what degree or from which point of view networks contribute to processes of identity construction, particularly if these processes imply the destruction of former identities.
