What is this study about and how does it affect me?
Your brother or sister has a disease that is called leukemia. This means unhealthy cells in their body are growing quickly and crowding their healthy cells, keeping them from doing their job. They have been treated with cancer fighting drugs called chemotherapy. They will need to have a bone marrow transplant to help replace the blood cells destroyed during chemotherapy. You have agreed to help your brother or sister by donating your bone marrow cells for their transplant. Bone marrow has stem cells in it. When the stem cells are given to your brother or sister, they grow into new healthy blood cells. Research
doctors want to know if giving you a drug before donating bone marrow will increase the
number of stem cells in your bone marrow. This drug is called filgrastim, or G-CSF, or
Neupogen. Throughout the rest of the form, we will call it G-CSF.
What will happen to me?
There is more than one treatment plan given on this study and the doctors want to know if one works better than the other. A goal of this study is to find out if one of the
treatment plans is better. Normally, we don’t give people G-CSF before they donate their
bone marrow. The two treatment plans are:
• Treatment plan #1: G-CSF is given to you before you donate your bone marrow
• Treatment plan #2: No drugs are given to you before you donate your bone marrow
The treatment plan assigned to you will be chosen by a computer and not by your doctor,
your parents or you. You have an equal chance of being assigned either one of the
treatment plans.

In che cosa consiste questo studio e che cosa succederà se vi parteciperò?
Tua sorella/tuo fratello ha una malattia che è chiamata leucemia. Ciò significa che nel suo corpo le cellule malate crescono rapidamente e soffocano le cellule sane, impedendo a queste di svolgere bene il loro lavoro. Tua sorella/tuo fratello è già stata/o sottoposta/o a una cura, chiamata chemioterapia, durante la quale ha ricevuto dei medicinali che combattono i tumori. Per sostituire le cellule del sangue distrutte durante la chemioterapia, ora ha bisogno di un trapianto di midollo osseo. Tu hai accettato di aiutare tua sorella/tuo fratello donando per il trapianto le cellule del tuo midollo osseo. Il midollo osseo contiene cellule staminali. Quando le cellule staminali verranno trasferite in tua sorella/tuo fratello si trasformeranno in nuove cellule del sangue sane. I medici ricercatori vogliono vedere se, dandoti un medicinale prima della donazione, il numero di cellule staminali nel tuo midollo osseo aumenterà. Questo medicinale è chiamato xxx, o ancora yyy. D'ora in poi lo chiameremo xxx.
Che cosa mi succederà?
Questo studio prevede più di un programma di trattamento e i medici vogliono capire se uno funziona meglio dell'altro. Scoprire se un programma di trattamento è meglio dell’altro è obiettivo di questo studio. Normalmente, i medici non danno il xxx alle persone prima della donazione di midollo osseo. I due programmi di trattamento sono:
• programma di trattamento #1: ti viene dato il xxx prima che doni il midollo osseo
• programma di trattamento #2: non ti viene dato il xxx prima che doni il midollo osseo.
Il programma di trattamento che seguirai sarà scelto da un computer e non dal tuo medico, dai tuoi genitori o da te. Hai la stessa probabilità di essere assegnato all’uno o all'altro programma di trattamento.
