Prevention in new homes tends to be more cost-effective than mitigation of existing homes. In some low risk areas the measurement costs are sometimes higher than the mitigation costs (for existing dwellings) due to the high number of homes that will have to be tested compared to the proportion of homes mitigated. Even if analyses indicate that remediation programmes are not cost-effective on a nationwide basis, indoor radon at high concentrations poses a considerable risk of lung cancer for individuals and requires mitigation. Die Biodiversität hat nicht nur einen Vermächtnis- und Existenzwert, sie liefert für die Men-schen auch zahlreiche Güter und Leistungen – so genannte Ökosystemleistungen (Leistun-gen und Güter der Ökosysteme). Die Ökosystemleistungen bilden die Grundlage für das menschliche Leben und Handeln. So nutzt beispielsweise die Landwirtschaft die Bestäubung der Bienen, die Energiewirtschaft verwendet Wasser, Holz und Biomasse, die Pharmaindustrie profitiert von Arten mit Heilwirkung oder genetischen Ressourcen, der Tourismus wirbt mit der vielfältigen Landschaft, welche von Ökosystemen und Arten ge-prägt ist. In den meisten Fällen wird für Ökosystemleistungen kein Preis verlangt, da es sich um ein öffentliches Gut handelt ("Alle profitieren davon, ohne dass man sie daran hindern kann"). Die Biodiversität produziert einen externen Nutzen, der nicht über den Markt abgegolten wird. Source text - French L’agriculture occupe près de 50% du territoire helvétique. Pendant des siècles, les agriculteurs ont dessiné les paysages de nos régions et contribué à préserver et enrichir leurs valeurs naturelles, paysagères et culturelles. Lorsque l’agriculture prend en compte la nature, elle joue un rôle clé pour conserver la biodiversité ici et ailleurs. Depuis la fin de la 2ème Guerre Mondiale, l'exploitation intensive des terres agricoles avec ses remaniements parcellaires et les produits chimiques (pesticides et fertilisants) fragmentent et détériorent l'habitat de nombreuses espèces animales et végétales. Aujourd'hui, des pratiques agricoles inadaptées, comme l'arrosage de prairies maigres, détruisent encore de nombreuses surfaces naturelles. Les paysages ruraux traditionnels, riches en espèces, disparaissent en raison de l'abandon des terres et d’un manque d'entretien des surfaces naturelles extensives. Par ailleurs, l’intensification de la production sur les surfaces restantes menace la biodiversité liée à l’agriculture. Ancora oggi, pratiche agricole inadeguate, come l’irrigazione dei prati magri, distruggono numerose aree naturali. L’abbandono delle terre, dovuto all’esodo rurale, e la mancanza di cura delle aree naturali estensive comportano la scomparsa dei paesaggi rurali tradizionali e della loro ricca biodiversità.
