English to German: Excerpt from Wicked Devil (by Daniela Romero; translated by Djamila Vilcsko) General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English “If we win,” He points to the three of them. “You wear a bikini the rest of the weekend. Day and night. No exceptions.”
I snort. Typical. “And if I win?”
He shrugs. “What do you want?”
[...]
“If I win, you three wear bikinis all weekend. Day and night. No exceptions, either.”
The crowd cheers on the idea and Emilio’s grin widens while Dom and Roman’s matching scowls deepen. I don’t even bother trying to hold back my laugh.
“Alright. Alright. I can get behind that.”
“No,” Dom says. “You fuckers have at it. My black ass is not wearing a bikini.”
Emilio chuckles. “But Dom, you’d look fine as fuck in one and you know it.”
His scowl deepens even more and I clutch my stomach, laughing, as I picture Dominique in a bikini. “Alright. You get a pass,” I say when I can catch my breath again. “But only because teams need to be equal. Two on two.”
I turn to Aaron and he gives me a reassuring smile. He’s in, even though I’m pretty sure if we lose, the guys only care if I’m the one in a bikini. Good thing I bought one today.
Then I turn to Roman and lift a single brow. I’m almost positive he’ll bow out like Dominique did but he surprises me when he grabs a ping pong ball and says, “Rack them up.”
Translation - German „Wenn wir gewinnen“, er zeigt auf seine Dreiergruppe, „dann läufst du den Rest des Wochenendes im Bikini herum. Tag und Nacht. Ohne Ausnahme.“
Ich schnaube. Typisch. „Und wenn ich gewinne?“
Er zuckt mit den Schultern. „Was willst du denn?“
[...]
„Wenn ich gewinne, dann lauft ihr drei das ganze Wochenende in Bikinis herum. Tag und Nacht. Ebenfalls ohne Ausnahme.“
Die Menge jubelt bei dieser Idee, und Emilios Grinsen wird breiter, während Dom und Roman beide noch mehr die Stirn runzeln. Ich gebe mir nicht mal mehr Mühe, mir das Lachen zu verkneifen.
„Okay. Okay. Das kann ich akzeptieren.“
„Nein“, sagt Dom.

Whenever the literary German dives into a sentence, that is the last you are going to see of him till he emerges on the other side of his Atlantic with his verb in his mouth.

Would you like to hire a professional with excellent skills to do some verbal diving for you?
I am a German native speaker with a university degree in Modern Languages (English and French). I studied at Keele University, England, for a year as part of my university program and spent several months in California. I have been working as a freelance translator for 17 years. I started out in medical market research and branched out to other medical sectors. Recently, I have shifted my focus to literary translations because I enjoy working with language in a creative way. Up to now, I have translated four novels and am looking forward to translating many more. I particularly welcome fantasy, humorous stories, historical novels and children's and young adult books.
I have extensive experience with medical and fashion translations and accept translation offers from these fields.
A particular service of mine is transcription for audio material (medical topics in particular), either verbatim German to German or a direct translation from German audio material to English text.
Feel free to contact me if you require further information about my qualifications/experience or services. I am happy to answer your questions and look forward to hearing from you.
