Source text - English Feeling good from the rosy wine at lunch, Nicole Diver folded her arms high enough for the artificial camellia on her shoulder to touch her cheek, and went out into her lovely grassless garden. The garden was bounded on one side by the house, from which it flowed and into which it ran, on two sides by the old village, and on the last by the cliff falling by ledges to the sea. Along the walls on the village side all was dusty, the wriggling vines, the lemon and eucalyptus trees, the casual wheel-barrow, left only a moment since, but already grown into the path, atrophied and faintly rotten. Nicole was invariably somewhat surprised that by turning in the other direction past a bed of peonies she walked into an area so green and cool that the leaves and petals were curled with tender damp. Knotted at her throat she wore a lilac scarf that even in the achromatic sunshine cast its color up to her face and down around her moving feet in a lilac shadow. Her face was hard, almost stern, save for the soft gleam of piteous doubt that looked from her green eyes. Her once fair hair had darkened, but she was lovelier now at twenty-four than she had been at eighteen, when her hair was brighter than she. Following a walk marked by an intangible mist of bloom that followed the white border stones she came to a space overlooking the sea where there were lanterns asleep in the fig trees and a big table and wicker chairs and a great market umbrella from Sienna, all gathered about an enormous pine, the biggest tree in the garden. She paused there a moment, looking absently at a growth of nasturtiums and iris tangled at its foot, as though sprung from a careless handful of seeds, listening to the plaints and accusations of some nursery squabble in the house. When this died away on the summer air, she walked on, between kaleidoscopic peonies massed in pink clouds, black and brown tulips and fragile mauve-stemmed roses, transparent like sugar flowers in a confectioner’s window — until, as if the scherzo of color could reach no further intensity, it broke off suddenly in mid-air, and moist steps went down to a level five feet below.	Translation - Bulgarian Никол Дайвър се чувстваше добре от хубавото вино на обяд, скръсти ръцете си достатъчно високо за да може изкуствената камелия на рамото й да докосне бузата й и като излезе се отправи към прекрасната безтревна градина. Градината беше заобиколена от едната страна от къщата, от която започваше и в която се влизаше, от двете страни беше заобиколена от стратото село и от последната от скала, с рифове, насочени към морето. Покраи стените от страната на селото всичко беше прашно, извиващите се лози, лимонените и ефкалиптовите дървета ,но вече пораснали и по пътеката, обикновенната количка с колела оставена само за миг, откакто бе порутена и изгнила. Никол винаги беше някакси изненадана от това, че като поемаше в друга посока мина покрай леха от божури и влезе в толкова зелена и студена област, че листата и венчелишчетата бяха накъдрени от нежната влага. Тя носеше светловиолетов шал, вързан на връта й, който дори и в безцветната слънчева светлина хвърляше цвета си нагоре по лицето й и надолу около движещите й се крака в светловиолетовата сянка. Лицето й беше безизразно, почти строго, запазено за нежния проблясък на жалкото съмнение което излъчваха зелените й очи. Някогашната й светла коса беше потъмняла, но сега на двадесет и четири тя беше по-голяма любовчийка отколкото на осемнайсет, когато косата й беше хубава от нея. Тя следваше пътека покрита с неосезаема мъгла от разцъфтели цветя, която следваше белите гранични камъни и дойде на едно място което гледаше към морето, където имаше угаснали фенери в смокинените дървета и една голяма маса и слаби столове и голям пазарски чадър от Сиена, всички събрани около един голям бор, най-голямото дърво в градината. Source text - Bulgarian - Ния, чедо, отдавна не си идвала у нас, та се поразтъжих за тебе. Петте куки в бялата прежда заблестяха бързо-бързо между тънките пъргави пръсти на девойката. Гъста червенина се разля по цялото й лице, обагри нежния пух на белите кожи по дрешката й. Едвам задържа отговора си - как можеше да каже тя това, което искаше да каже тъкмо на тая стара жена, Лазевата майка! Нека старата сама да се досети. - У нас сички те милуват, Нио - опитваше Султана почвата предпазливо, преди да стъпи направо. - Но може би не те тегли много към нас? - Тегли ме, стрино Султано, драго ми е да дойда, но се боя. - Боиш се? От кого, сине? - пристъпваше бързо и смело Султана, търсеше отговора, който искаше да получи. - Като река да дойда, може некой да ми затвори портата ви и да остана на улицата - усмихна се девойката, привела лице над плетивото. - Кой, сине? Ния дигна очи към нея: - Лазар. Султана не я погледна, за да не я смути и подплаши в смелостта й. Тя каза, топлейки набръчканите си ръце на мангала: - Аз съм му майка, отгледала съм го, Нио, и най- добре знам какво е в сърцето му. Нема да ти затвори портата ни той, ами повеке заради баща ти. Нещо се противят те двамата в общината и такива са мъжете. Като тръгнат един срещу друг, могат да прегазят и каквото им е най-мило. На жената не прилега да е много горделива, когато я тегли сърце към некого, а тя требва да познава и силата си. Не знам дали нема да ми се присмееш. . . - поколеба се за последен път Султана, но ясно се виждаше по лицето на момичето как приемаше то думите й.тя се приведе към него решително, докосна с върха на коравите си пръсти присвитите му колена: - Да си говорим като майка и щерка, мила ми си като моите родни щерки, Нио, отвори си сърцето пред мене: искаш ли го ти моя Лазе? She holds her answer with great difficulty – How could she ever tell want she want to this woman, Laze’s mother. May the old woman find it for herself. - Everybody fondles you at home, Nio - before proceeding forwards, the Sultan cautiously saw how the land lies. – May be you are not very found of us? - I am, aunt Sultano, always gladly to come, but afraid. - You are afraid? Whom do you fear, my son? In order to find the answer he was looking for, the Sultan was stepping swiftly and bravely. - When I wish to come, someone may shut the door and I’ll be on the street – smiled the young lady, bent over the knitting. - Who, son of mine? Nia raised her eyes towards her. - Lazar In order not to embarrass and frighten the young lady in her braveness, Sultana did not look at her.
