Source text - English Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid pigment with excellent antioxidant effect extracted and purified from the deep red microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis.
It is a powerful quencher of singlet oxygen, which protects cells from radical attack and inhibits lipid peroxidation.
Its ability to span through the cell membrane bi-layer because of its unique structure with polar terminal rings.
The polar OH-group in two terminal rings of astaxanthin is likely to be oriented at/near membrane surface while the polyene chain in the interior of the membrane
This make it effectively in scavenging ROS at membrane surface while its polyene chain inhibit oxidative chain reaction in the membrane.
