Currently I only have limited capacity and are not available for high volume and fast turnaround time.
I am a freelance German - English translator/interpreter specializing in life sciences (medical, biological, pharmaceutical), patent and legal translation and medical, legal and educational interpretation
I am available for freelance translation and interpretation assignments, legal review and German language teaching in the DC Metro area (Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland) or online. I travel for assignments upon request.
I completed the "Certificate in German to English Translation" at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies in 2010 by taking a general subject course and courses in medical, patent, legal and financial translation as well as CAT tool (Studio 2009, across) and project management. For subject matter training I have attended specific courses for clinical trials and pharmacology and also participated in science writing and editing courses. For further professional development I attend regularly local meetings of the ATA chapter, seminars and conferences.
My interpretation training included courses in consecutive, simultaneous and site translation (Georgetown University), two 40 hour courses in community and medical interpretation as well as courses in note taking, legal and simultaneous interpreting.
As a German native, who is familiar with different accents from Austria and Switzerland, I teach and tutor individual adults, children and small group classes onsite and online since several years. In addition, I have experience preparing students for ILR- and CEFR-based tests as well as DAF-Tests.
I received a doctorate (German Dr. rer. nat.) in biology with a thesis in neuroimmunology and a German Diplom (master equivalent) in Biology (majors: zoology, botany; minor: biochemistry) from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. For more than 15 years I conducted biomedical research mainly in fields of neuroscience/neuroimmunology in the US and Germany. During this time I worked on models of multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and myelination using methods of protein biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and pathology. Before studying I received a training as a medical assistant (state certification for medical assistants from Baden-Württemberg (Germany)) and worked in a university laboratory for two years as well as in a physician's office in Germany.
