عاد جحا الى بيته يحمل جرّة فارغة فسألته زوجته :
- لِمَ اشتريت هذه يا جحا؟
قال في سرور :
- لأنه بعد أيام يُطالِعنا شهر رمضان المبارك، و هذه الجرّة من أجله. هذه الجرّة، يا سيدتي، من أجل أنْ أعرف عدد أيام شهر رمضان.
قالتْ الزوجة :
- الآن فهمت، ستضع بها الحصا.
فلمّا جاء شهر رمضان كان جحا يضع كل يوم حصاةً في الجرّة كَيْ لا يخطئ في حساب الأيام و يعلم بذلك ما مضى منه و ما بقيَ. فلمّا مضت عدة أيام من شهر رمضان، و لاحظت إبنته الصغيرة ما يفعله والدها، تعجّبت و ظنّت أنّها لعبة. و في اليوم التالي دفع حب التقليد الفتاة أنْ تقلّد أباها، و أنْ تخفّف عنه هذا العمل فأسرعت تجمع الحصا من الطريق ثم تُلقيه في الجرّة.
و بينما كان جحا يجلس بين أصدقائه، اختلف بعضهم على عدد الأيام الماضية من الشهر المبارك، و راح كل منهم يتمسّك برأيه. فقال جحا:
- و لِمَ الإختلاف يا أصدقاء و الجرّة موجودة؟ إنَّ في البيت جرّة، سأعرف منها حالاً عدد أيام رمضان .ثم أسرع الى بيته لإحْضار الجرّة. راح جحا يُحصى الحصا فوجده مائة و عشرين. فقال لزوجته:
- خذي هذه الجرّة إنّها خير و بركة، فإذا وضعت فيها بدلاً من الحصا مالاً صيّرتْه لك مضاعفاً.
Translation - Italian Il conto della giara
Joha tornò a casa portando con sè una giara vuota così la moglie gli chiese:
- Perché hai comprato questa, Joha?
Rispose contento:
- Poiché tra pochi giorni saremo nel mese benedetto del Ramadan e questa giara è per questo motivo. Questa giara, mia signora, servirà a contare il numero dei giorni del Ramadan.
Disse la moglie:
- Ora ho capito, ci metterai dei sassolini.
Quando giunse il mese di Ramadan, Joha ogni giorno metteva un sassolino nella giara affinché non sbagliasse il conto dei giorni e sapesse quanti ne fossero passati e quanti ne fossero rimasti. Quando furono passati alcuni giorni del mese di Ramadan e sua figlia si accorse di cosa facesse il padre, si meravigliò e pensò che si trattasse di un gioco. La voglia di imitazione spinse la ragazza ad imitare il padre e ad alleggerire il suo lavoro perciò si affrettò a raccogliere sassolini per la strada e a gettarli nella giara.
Mentre Joha era seduto con i suoi amici, alcuni di loro discussero su quanti giorni del mese di Ramadan fossero trascorsi ed ognuno rimaneva fermo sulla sua opinione. E disse Joha:
- E perché discutere quando c’è la giara? A casa ho una giara da cui saprò subito il numero di giorni del Ramadan.
Poi si affrettò verso casa per prendere la giara e quando contò i sassolini ne trovò 120. Così disse a sua moglie:
- Prendi questa giara! E’ benedetta!...se al posto di metterci dei sassolini ci metti del denaro te lo raddoppierà!

Source text - Italian CEGLIE MESSAPICA NEL CORSO DELL’ULTIMO VENTENNIO
Dalla relatività locale alla risonanza glocale.
Prima di volgere lo sguardo su Ceglie Messapica, oggetto principale del lavoro, ho dedicato la primissima parte della tesi all'approfondimento degli aspetti formativi dell'identità meridionale. Questo perché ho ritenuto opportuno cogliere e comprendere i meccanismi storico-culturali che stanno alla base delle comunità meridionali, caratterizzate da una grande sensibilità e senso di appartenenza nei confronti dei propri luoghi e delle proprie tradizioni. Interviste redatte ai sindaci e ai consiglieri comunali che si sono susseguiti, ai cittadini locali dal grande spessore culturale, insieme a documentari, brochure e programmi hanno costituito il materiale di studio ed analisi nella stesura dell’elaborato.
I vari aspetti presi in esame dal punto di vista teorico, e resi testimonianza citata da studiosi del Sud, li ho riscontrati e confrontati nella città-oggetto di studio ed esempio di tante simili realtà. Le voci delle figure maggiormente rappresentative dei cittadini locali, hanno evidenziato una necessità di reazione ai processi di omologazione e standardizzazione imposti dal senso di "moderno", attraverso una riconsiderazione, desiderata e curata nel corso dell'ultimo ventennio in particolare, di luoghi dall'impronta antica ma dal respiro vitale, dal profumo benefico per l'incremento e l'avvenire.
Dal secondo capitolo in poi una minuziosa descrizione dei processi rivalutativi e dei meccanismi di trasmissione , promossi essi stessi alla generazione del futuro.
Ceglie Messapica, città scrigno di storie, ricordi e simboli, nel corso dei secoli è stata avvolta da un polverone che ne ha modificato profilo e forma; la tesi, dunque, focalizza l’indagine negli ultimi vent’anni in particolare, periodo proficuo di interventi rigenerativi volti alla modernizzazione e alla salvaguardia degli spazi di relazione, nella necessità di renderli fruibili di vita, perché essenza autentica dell’identità cittadina.
I cambiamenti, i lavori, i progetti perseguiti e col tempo realizzati ruotavano tutti attorno ad un obiettivo di fondo: ristabilire le condizioni di una comunità comunicante.
Translation - English CEGLIE MESSAPICA WITHIN THE LAST TWENTY YEARS
From the local relativity to a “glocal” resonance
Before analyzing the case of Ceglie Messapica, which is the main aim of my research, in the very first part of my thesis I have studied in deep the educational aspects of the southern identity. This choice has been led by a personal interest in understanding the historical-cultural mechanisms which are at the basis of the southern communities, which are characterized by great sensibility and by a sense of belonging to their places and traditions. This research is based on some interviews with mayors, city councilors and local people, who are important for their cultural level; documentaries, pamphlets and programs have constituted the materials of this study.
I have considered these various aspects from a theoretical point of view, found them and then compared to each other inside in the context of the city that is the object of my study and an example of other similar realities. The statements of the most representative local people highlighted the necessity to react against the process of homologation and standardization which have been imposed by the sense of “modern”; this reaction should be done through a reconsideration, which has been particularly desired and cared for during the last twenty years, of those places with an ancient touch but still so vital and with a beneficial perfume for the improvement and the future.
From the second chapter on, there is a detailed description of the revaluating processes and the transmission mechanisms which are promoted to the future generation. Ceglie Messapica is a city which hides many stories, memories and symbols and during the last centuries has been surrounded by a sort of dust which has modified its profile and its shape. My thesis focuses on the last twenty years, a successful period for a sort of regeneration which aims at modernization and preservation of the relational spaces in order to make them useful for people’s lives since they are the authentic essence of the town identity.
Each change, work or designed and then fulfilled project has aimed at restoring a communicating community.
