Source text - Italian Uno dei preparati più famosi dell’epoca era la Cipria: nell’attuale legge 713/86 questa famiglia cosmetica viene definita: «Cipria per il trucco, talco per il dopobagno e per l'igiene corporale ecc.». Denominata anticamente anche polvere di Cipro, era disponibile in molti colori: bianca, nera, rossa, e con tonalità intermedie. La base utilizzata erano i licheni raccolti in inverno, seccati, polverizzati e ripetutamente setacciati per ottenere una polvere impalpabile alla quale poi erano aggiunti profumi vari, la farina ottenuta dai tubercoli del cipero odoroso, ricca di amido e naturalmente odorosa, e i coloranti.
Translation - English One of the most famous preparation of that period was Cipria (face powder). Originally called Cyprus-powder, contemporary Italian law (713/86) defines this cosmetic family as “face powder for make-up, and talcum powder for after-bath care and body hygiene, etc.” It was available in many colours: white, black, red, and their respective tonal gradations. The base was made of lichens picked in winter, dried, pulverised, and repeatedly sieved to obtain an impalpable powder, which was subsequently enriched with various perfumes, flour from the nodules of the galingale plant (rich in starch and naturally odorous), and dyes.

La “teoria dei modelli” è proposta negli anni Trenta dal filosofo polacco Tarsky, che si occupa dei parametri di veridicità delle frasi e poi della logica semantica nelle definizioni scientifiche: un modello è l’interpretazione vera, e quindi unica e perennemente valida, di un enunciato (linguistico, logico-formale, algebrico, ecc.); negli anni Cinquanta la collaborazione con Robert Vaugh porta Tarsky a concentrare l’attenzione sugli studi matematici e di logica pura, abbandonando vieppiù l’interesse linguistico, per cui la teoria dei modelli, originalmente logico-semantica, diviene un aspetto della ricerca matematica.
L’ambiguità della lingua porta questi filosofi a privilegiare definizioni non verbali, dalle semplici equazioni in cui rimane traccia dell’origine linguistica (ad esempio la velocità V come rapporto tra spazio percorso S e tempo T impiegato per percorrerlo: V = S / T) ai modelli matematici veri e propri. Anche in alcune teorie linguistiche, ad esempio negli studi di Grammatica Universale, negli studi di Saumian, negli alberi in linguistica generativa, la definizione formulaica è stata preferita, anche se il filosofo e semiologo francese Réné Thom ha preso le mosse proprio dall’attacco alla ricerca di strutture stabili ipotizzate dai linguisti per la sua teoria delle catastrofi: una “catastrofe” è il mutamento di un modello, la dimostrazione della sua “fragilità” in quanto se il modello viene modificato lo si riconosce come non-modello e anche il nuovo modello, prodotto dall’evoluzione del precedente, ha in sé il “peccato originale” di nascere da un modello falso.
Tuttavia, non tutte le scienze o gli ambiti di studio accettano definizioni formulaiche, verificabili attraverso la logica formale o quella matematica: la glottodidattica, cioè lo studio dell’educazione linguistica nella sua accezione più ampia, è una di quelle, e quindi si basa tradizionalmente su definizioni verbali. Spesso si cita l’illuminista Réné Condillac quando dice che una scienza è “una lingua ben fatta”, ma questa definizione porta a un ulteriore problema in quanto, come ricorda Arcaini (1988) nella sua riflessione sulla epistemologia del linguaggio scientifico, si crea una relazione pericolosa tra le regole logico-formali dei modelli scientifici e le regole della lingua naturale che vuole esprimerle.
Ridurre quindi l’ambiguità della lingua usata per le dichiarazioni che definiscono i modelli diventa quindi essenziali per limitarne la “fragilità”, per ridurre il rischio di “catastrofe”.
2.2 I modelli nelle scienze cognitive
Il concetto di “modello” è utilizzato anche nelle scienze cognitive, sebbene con un’accezione meno forte di quella di Tarsky e Vaugh che abbiamo visto sopra.
Negli stessi anni in cui i due filosofi si “rifugiano” nei modelli strettamente matematici, la nozione tradizionale di modello entra in crisi anche in un altro settore che aveva intensamente cercato la modellizzazione: la psicologia neo-comportamentista di Tolman e Skinner, che in ordine all’apprendimento si basava sul modello S → R (→ C/C), comincia a concepire l’esistenza di una serie di processi che mediano tra S e R e che sono interni alla mente, quindi non ascrivibili a “comportamenti”. E’ la “catastrofe” dell’impianto skinneriano, cui contribuiscono sia Chomsky nel 1957 e 1959, sia la traduzione inglese che rende finalmente accessibile anche in Occidente Pensiero e Linguaggio di Vygostkij, opera che in realtà è del 1936 ed è quindi coeva alle prime opere di Tarsky, polacco attento alla filosofia dell’area culturale slava.
Dalla catastrofe skinneriana emergono sia la linguistica chomskyana, come si è detto, sia la formalizzazione di impostazioni già presenti nel decennio precedente, condotta da Neisser e culminata in Cognitive Psychology, del 1967, in cui si tendeva a proporre schemi validi sul piano puramente logico indipendentemente dalla loro identificazione e misurabilità empirica: la Zona di Sviluppo Prossimale di Vygotsky ed il Language Acquisition Device di Chomsky – per restare nelle aree della lingua e dell’apprendimento, oggetto specifico della glottodidattica – sono le catastrofi dell’approccio strutturalistico e sono esempi di modelli non empirici e non misurabili, della stessa natura di quelli teorizzati dalle scienze cognitive.
Il modello diviene una struttura che include tutti e solo i fattori rilevanti di un’idea, di un’azione, di un oggetto, di un fenomeno: in un modello vanno rappresentate solo le proprietà “emergenti” dell’oggetto in modo che le informazioni accessorie o imprevedibili non lo sovraccarichino incrementando il tasso di falsificabilità, quindi la possibilità di una “catastrofe”: in questo senso, per citare un’opera fondamentale per le sue conseguenze glottodidattiche, viene usato “modello” nel celeberrimo saggio di Hymes sui Models of Interaction.
Translation - English 2.1 The models in formal logic
A “theory of models” was proposed in the 1930s by the Polish philosopher, Tarsky, who dealt with the parameters of sentence veracity and semantic logic in scientific definitions: a model is a true interpretation, therefore unique and perpetually valid, of a formulation (linguistic, logical-formal, algebraic, etc.); in the 1950s, the collaboration with Robert Vaugh led Tarsky to focus his attention on mathematics and pure logic studies, largely abandoning his interest in linguistics. Therefore, this particular theory of models, originally logical-semantic, became an aspect of mathematic research.
The ambiguity of language led these philosophers to privilege non-verbal definitions, including simple equations that still kept a trace of their linguistic origin (for instance, speed V as the ratio between space S and time T: V = S / T), and real mathematic models. Also in certain linguistic theories a formula definition was privileged, for instance, in Universal Grammar studies, in Saumian studies, and in the "trees" of generative linguistics. It is worth remembering that the theory of catastrophes proposed by the French philosopher and semiologist, Réné Thom, was inspired precisely by the attack against the stable structures that were hypothesized by linguists: a “catastrophe” is the mutation of a model, the demonstration of its “fragility” because, if the model is modified, it is therefore recognized as a non-model, and also the new model, produced by the evolution of the precedent one, has within itself the “original sin,” of being originated from a false model.
Nevertheless, not all sciences or spheres of study accept formula definitions, verifiable through formal logic or mathematics: the LTM, (i.e., the study of linguistic education in the broadest sense of these terms), is one of these and, therefore, is founded traditionally on verbal definitions. In this regard, Réné Condillac, a follower of the Enlightenment movement, is often quoted, namely, science is “a well made language.” However, this definition leads to a further problem because, as Arcaini (1988) recalls in his study of the epistemology of scientific language, it creates a dangerous relationship between the logical-formal rules of scientific models and the rules of the natural language that express them.
To reduce the ambiguity of the language used for the declarations that define models, it becomes therefore essential, in order to limit “fragility,” to reduce the risk of “catastrophe.”
2.2 The cognitive "models"
The concept of “model” is used also in the cognitive sciences, although with a meaning less robust than the one given above by Tarsky and Vaugh.
In the same years when these two philosophers “sheltered” themselves in strictly mathematical models, the traditional concept of model entered a crisis also in another sector that intensely sought model order: the neo-behaviouristic psychology of Tolman and Skinner which, regarding the learning process, was based on the model S → R ( → C/C), that expressed the existence of a series of mediating processes between S and R, processes that are mental and, therefore, they cannot be attributed to “behaviours.” This is the “catastrophe” inherent in Skinner’s theory, a fact also noted by Chomsky in 1957 and 1959, along with the translation into English of Vygostkij’s, "Pensiero e Linguaggio;" (this latter work was written in 1936, and is therefore contemporary with Tarsky’s earlier work regarding the philosophy of the Slavic culture, to which he frequently devoted much of his attention).
From Skinner's catastrophe emerged Chomsky’s linguistic theories along with Neisser’s previous formalisation of formulations, and culminated in 1967 with his Cognitive Psychology. In this, Neisser proposed schemes that were valid on a purely logical basis, independent from their identification and empirical measurability: to stay within the spheres of language and learning, (the specific objects of LTM), Vygotsky's "Zone of Proximal Development," and Chomsky's, "Language Acquisition Device," demonstrate the catastrophes inherent in the structuralist approach and they are examples of non-empirical and non-measurable models, as evidenced in the models theorised by the cognitive sciences.
The model becomes a structure that includes all and only the relevant factors of an idea, an action, an object, a phenomenon: only the “emergent” properties of the object must be represented in a model, so that secondary or unpredictable information does not overload the model and therefore increase the degree of its falsification, increase the possibility of a “catastrophe.” It is precisely in this sense that the "model" proposed by Hymes in his famous essay, Models of Interaction, is used and deemed fundamental for its LTM consequences.
