DIONISIO: Pero, sin embargo, exagera usted ... No está bien que cuando hace frío nos meta usted botellas de agua caliente en la cama; ni que cuando estamos constipados se acueste usted con nosotros para darnos más calor y sudar; ni que nos dé usted besos cuando nos marchamos de viaje. No está bien tampoco que, cuando un huésped está desvelado, entre usted en la alcoba con su cornetín de pistón e interprete romanzas de su época, hasta conseguir que se quede dormidito ... ¡Es ya demasiada bondad ...! ¡Abusan de usted ...!
DON ROSARIO: Pobrecillos ... Déjelos ..., casi todos los que vienen aquí son viajantes, empleados, artistas ... Hombres solos ... Hombres sin madres ... Y yo quiero ser un padre para todos, ya que no lo pude ser para mi pobre niño ... ¡Aquel niño mío que se ahogó en un pozo ...! (Se emociona.)
DIONISIO: Vamos, don Rosario ... No piense usted en eso ...
DON ROSARIO: Usted ya conoce la historia de aquel pobre niño que se ahogo en el pozo ...
DIONISIO: Sí. La sé. Su niño se asomó al pozo para coger una rama ... Y el niño se cayó. Hizo ‘¡pin!’, y acabó too.
DON ROSARIO: Ésa es la historia, don Dionisio. Hizo ‘¡pin!’, y acabó todo. (Pausa dolorosa.)
Translation - English DON ROSARIO: You know me, Dionisio, sir. I can’t help it. It’s the way I am. I just can’t do enough for my guests ...
DIONISIO: That may well be, but you do too much for us ... I mean, when it’s cold you give us hot water bottles – it’s too much. You get into bed to warm us when we’ve a chill coming on; you kiss us goodbye when we leave. And you play lullabies on your little trumpet when we can’t sleep. You’re too kind! People take advantage of you!
DON ROSARIO: Poor lambs. Leave them be ... nearly everyone who stays here is a traveller, on business, an artist ... Lonely men ... Motherless men ... I just want to be a father to them all, especially since I can’t be one to my own poor boy/ My little boy who drowned in a well! (He gets upset.)
DIONISIO: Come on, Don Rosario ... don’t upset yourself ...
DON ROSARIO: You already know the story of my poor boy who drowned in the well.
DIONISIO: Yes, I know. He leant in to catch a frog and fell. Splash! And that was it!
DON ROSARIO: That’s it, Dionisio, sir. Splash! And that was it! (Awkward pause.)
