We believe that having the XXXXX at our small operation is not the best way for us to work together. I am the owner/operator of Baldwin Linguas, a small language services agency in New Haven, CT, but, first and foremost, am, myself, a translator and interpreter.
I am a court-qualified interpreter of Portuguese <> English,
and formerly a certified public school English teacher for grades 7-12 in Connecticut, USA. I interpreted PT/EN in the CT courts, Federal courts, depositions, Workers´ Comp, Immigration and other legal matters, as well as in medical appointments, from November 2005 until February 2010 for various agencies and numerous law firms.
I have taught English and Spanish in CT Public Schools, and private schools.
I have a B.A. in English Literature, 9 credits towards a Master of Library and Information Sciences, and an honorary D.Div in Comparative Religion and Mythology, which I have also taught. I studied French Language and Literature as a minor, including courses at the graduate level at Purdue University, having earned numerous credits in examinations due to earlier studies in high school, and have been speaking French for over 20 years. I received "A" grades in all of my French courses from high school to the graduate level.
My family is truly international, including members from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Brasil, so I speak Spanish and Portuguese fluently.
I have experience in the translation of:
labor, service and construction contracts, calls for bids, patents, sales and lease contracts, stock arrangements, powers of attorney, technical specifications (cahier des charges), and all other manner of legal materials. This field comprises over half the work I do;
clinical protocols (especially in regards to diabetes medications and devices. I am diabetic), medical patents (mostly cardiac stents and arthroscopy devices), medical reports, lab reports, patient questionnaires, academic psychology articles and other medical materials, including portions of the book "Olhares: Fragmentos de uma Historia da Cardiologia Portuguesa / Visions: Fragments of a History of Portuguese Cardiology". Many articles that I translated from Portuguese to English for the Spanish Journal of Psychology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid have been published in said review;

I have excellent technology knowledge and skills. I am an Open Source Software (Software Livre) user and developer, and have experience with Mac OSX, Windows 98, 2000, XP and 7, and various GNU/Linux systems (Red Hat, CentOS, Debian, PCLinuxOS, and more). When I worked as a teacher, I provided professional development to my peers in regard to internet technology use in the classroom and web page creation. I am an experienced webmaster, managing the BaldwinLinguas.com site and other sites. I once developed a GNU/Linux distribution especially for translators, and develop other software and scripts in unix/bash, tcl/tk, perl, and python, lua, lisp and ruby. I assembled all of the computers in my office from parts, and regularly update the hardware by hand.
I use OmegaT, Virtaal and Anaphraseus, Free/Open Source CAT programs, as well as Wordfast . I can manage your TTX, XLF, and TXML files, as well as any other industry standard file formats (all MS Office, .doc, .docx, xls, html, pdf, InDesign .idml, etc. as well as many formats for software and web localization) and can use and provide translation memories in standard tmx format (Trados, Wordfast, MemoQ, etc. can export/import said files, thus our tools are compatible).
