Source text - English This final report describes activities of a 4 year (1987-91) project at Western Maryland College to develop an 11-course graduate curriculum for teachers of American Sign Language (ASL) and teachers of ASL\English Interpreting. The Curriculum formed the basis for two graduate programs at Western Maryland College. The project also developed six videotapes. Accessibility of the curriculum in ASL was stressed, as many of the programs’ students are deaf. The report describes the project’s purpose (stemming from the lack of any other such programs), background and origins, program site selection, program site difficulties (leading to the planned termination of the programs at site), and project results. Appendix2, which is the curriculum itself: “A Model Curriculum for Teachers of American Sign Language and Teachers of ASL/English Interpreting,” was copyrighted in 1990 and is not included here. (DB)

Source text - English The scene at the entrance to Ingushetia’s second-largest town Karabulak is menacing. The traffic checkpoint has been reinforced and is now manned by federal troops in armoured vehicles.
The road is obstructed by concrete blocks forcing drivers to weave around before approaching the striped barrier, where a warning sign says, "Drivers, stop! Turn off your engine and allow your car to be inspected."
An armoured personnel carrier covers the road while soldiers and policemen select vehicles, check the passengers’ documents and rummage through the car interiors.
This is just like what Chechnya looked like a few years ago. But in neighbouring Chechnya, where rebels have fought two bitter wars against Russian troops since the end of Soviet Union, calm is returning. Ingushetia, home to the Chechens’ ethnic kin, once had a reputation for being relatively peaceful. That has all changed.
Translation - Arabic بات المشهد عند مشارف بلدة كرابولاك - ثاني أكبر بلدة في جمهورية إنغوشيا - مثيرا للذعر. فقد أُرسلت تعزيزات إلى نقاط التفتيش المرورية؛ و تم إمدادها بجنود من قوات فيدرالية في عربات مدرعة.
تعترض الطريق كتل خرسانية لإجبار السائقين على الدوران حولها قبل أن يصلوا إلى الحاجز ، حيث توجد علامة تحذير مكتوب عليها "قف، أيها السائق! أطفئ محرك سيارتك و اسمح لنا بتفتيشها".
وتُؤمن حاملة جنود مسلحة الطريق أثناء التفتيش، حيث يختار الجنود ورجال الشرطة بعض العربات، ثم يقومون بفحص الأوراق الخاصة بالركاب و البحث في الأغراض الداخلية للسيارة.
هذا المشهد مماثل للمشاهد التى كانت تحدث في الشيشان منذ عدة سنوات عندما خاض الثوار حربين مريرتين ضد القوات الروسية منذ سقوط الاتحاد السوفيتي. و لكن الهدوء قد بدأ يعم الشيشان المجاورة لانجوشا الآن.
