Chinese to English: Climate change
Source text - Chinese
Translation - English On the 20th of this month, UK’s global risk consultancy Maplecroft warned in a separate report that in the next 30 years, over ten countries will face “severe” disasters because of climate change, especially in South Asia.
• Numerous countries risk facing droughts
In the report, National Center for Atmospheric Research scientist Aiguo Dai said, “An increase in temperature linked to climate change could cause a rise in droughts in many areas in the next 30 years. Before the end of the century, the extent of droughts in some areas might be rare in history.”
By 2030, the extent of droughts in the United States of America is predicted to worsen. In this century, the risk of extreme droughts in numerous regions has increased. Large areas of Latin America, the Mediterranean coastal areas, majority of southwest Asia, Africa and most parts of Australia, as well as Southeast Asia are also facing severe droughts.
The United States of America suffer an average economic loss of 6 to 8 billion US dollars annually because of droughts. In the 1980s, disasters in Africa led by droughts caused over 500,000 deaths.

Linguistic background
There are four official languages in Singapore: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Singaporeans receive bilingual education. English is the medium of instruction in Singapore and is taught in school as a first language for all students. The ethnic mother tongue (Mandarin, in my case) is concurrently taught as a second language.
What my clients say:
“We can tell that you put in a lot of thought and effort to bring us the best translations you can provide in your capacity as a translator. My colleague was praising the translations, saying that on the whole, the word choices are apt and essence of the concepts seems to be captured. Keep up the good work!”
“Siang has consistently presented high quality deliverables that are at once timely and accurate. I would be happy to have someone of her calibre on my team and I would recommend her services to anyone.”
