Source text - English Few economic events in recent history have delivered as great a shock to the international political and economic order as the rise of China from being one of the smaller economies, and the poorest of nations, to one of the four largest global economic powers within the short span of thirty years. The subsequent and almost as sudden emergence of India as another rapidly growing Asian giant, two decades after China, has triggered another bout of anxious forecasting neatly divided between economists on the one hand, who tend to welcome the rise of China and India as the prime engines of growth in the twenty-first century, and foreign policy and defense
analysts on the other, who regard China’s growth as a potential threat and India’s emergence as a possible counterbalance in an increasingly complex balance of power.
