analysts on the other, who regard China’s growth as a potential threat and India’s emergence as a possible counterbalance in an increasingly complex balance of power.

Il successivo e quasi altrettanto subitaneo emergere dell’India quale secondo gigante asiatico in rapida crescita, due decenni dopo la Cina, ha generato nuovi timori per il futuro, con una netta distinzione tra gli economisti da un lato, che tendono ad accogliere favorevolmente l’ascesa della Cina e dell’India giudicando questi due paesi i motori primi della crescita nel XXI secolo, e gli analisti di politica estera e di difesa dall’altro, che considerano la crescita della Cina una minaccia potenziale e guardano all’avvento dell’India come a un possibile contrappeso, in un equilibrio di poteri sempre più complesso.
