As a professional driver, staying out of at-risk situations and avoiding accidents needs to be your top priority.
You can accomplish this by exercising good speed and space management skills. Speed management means adjusting your vehicle's speed to current traffic, weather and road conditions. Space management means allowing an adequate safety cushion between you and the vehicle(s) directly in front, behind and to the sides of your truck.

➣ Drive with an eye and an ear to existing traffic and weather conditions.
➣ Stay alert for hazards and potentially high-risk driving situations before they become emergencies—look ahead!
➣ Understand that your vehicle takes longer to come to a complete stop than other vehicles.
➣ Constantly scan your mirrors: look to the sides and to the rear.
➣ Maintain a safety cushion around your vehicle.
➣ Never follow other vehicles too closely (Don’t tailgate!).
➣ Know what is above and below your vehicle…look above for overhanging wires, branches, and signs; look below for road debris, raised pavement and potholes
