I studied economics at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia (1970-1974) and later pursued journalism as a career. I started as a Reporter, progressing to Assistant News Editor of The New Straits Times (English language newspaper based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and Chief Leader Writer of its sister, Malay language daily newspaper Berita Harian before leaving the company in 1984 to study Law. Except for two years from 1996-1998, when I was the Director of Institut Kajian Dasar (Institute for Policy Research), an internationally-linked non-profit think tank, where I was responsible for organizing and conducting seminars, conferences, study groups and undertaking studies and research on current political, social, economic and international affairs, and publishing and disseminating the relevant reports on a broad range of issues of interest to policy makers, corporate and government leaders, I was an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya from 1992-2005. In addition, from 2001 to 2005, I was Lecturer (Part time) at the Faculty of Performing Arts, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Subjects taught: Performing Arts Law, Islamic Thought in Literature, Strategic Communication, Introduction to Classical Texts, and Translation Basics, as well as Lecturer (Part time) Department of Social Administration and Justice, Faculty of Arts and Social Science, University of Malaya. Subject taught: Social Legislation II (Malaysian Employment and Labour Laws).
From 2005 to 2009, I was at the Malaysian Parliament’s Research Unit -- providing support research to Members of Parliament as well as to the House Public Accounts Committee. With my wide experience and strategic local and international networking. After leaving government service in late 2009, I was appointed Associate Consultant for Innovacia Sdn Bhd, a private limited company incorporated in Malaysia with its core business as Technology Support Consultants for Planning, Architectural, Engineering, Construction and Conservation communities. Since the beginning of 2013, I am attached to Restu Foundation, a non-profit organization, whose core activity is the calligraphic reproduction of the Quran, as Coordinator for the foundation's English translation project.
