Source text - Japanese
Translation - English Yamanashi Prefecture comes to mind when thinking of Yumura Onsen in the Kanto region, while in the Kansai area this honor belongs to Hyogo Prefecture. There is also a Yumura Onsen in Shimane Prefecture, as well; to differentiate between them, these areas are respectively called Kofu Yumura Onsen, San'in Yumura Onsen, and Izumo Yumura Onsen. To prevent any misunderstanding, I will introduce Hyogo Prefecture's Yumura Onsen as San'in Yumura Onsen.
As you might be able to tell from its name, in the past the village was called "Yu." Over time, the name changed to Onsen-mura, then to Onsen-cho, finally arriving at the current name of Shin'Onsen-cho. Even today, a large district in the town still bears the name "Yu." When speaking of hot water and onsen, we are surely talking about the Yumura Onsen in this area. When the town was still called Onsen-cho, the Onsen-cho Town Hall existed on the site where Yakushiyu is located now; highway signs bore markings such as "Onsen 20 km," and there was a strong feeling that onsen = Yumura.
San'in Yumura Onsen is classified as a bicarbonate-type onsen. Also known as sodium bicarbonate, this type of onsen is famous for having water which rejuvenates the skin and body. Inns and bathhouses boasting their own wellsprings are numerous, but the best example is "Arayu" located in the center of the onsen district—the 98 °C waters of that facility allow onsen eggs to be boiled in a short amount of time.
Eggs purchased at local souvenir shops come in a net which is attached to a string measured out to the perfect length. There are areas for boiling the eggs in "Arayu," recognizable by nails with written numbers. Simply hang the string on a nail, then wait eleven minutes. There are footbaths along the river, which might be a nice place to wait.
The curious thing is that you really get the sense of coming to Yumura Onsen when you cook an onsen egg at "Arayu."
I definitely hope you get the chance to try it out for yourself.
