English to Japanese: Gaining information for poker game General field: Other Detailed field: Gaming/Video-games/E-sports
Source text - English Gaining information
Everybody knows that the action in a poker game or tournament moves in a clockwise direction and comes from the right. By the time the action gets to you, you will already know what your opponents on your right have done, whether they have called, raised or passed, but what about the players on your left?
How can you know what they are going to do? It's easier than you think. The next time you play a poker tournament don't watch the players who act before you but watch the players on your left. Don't stare at them and let them know you are watching them or they may act differently but carefully watch their actions out of the corner of your eye. The easiest way to know whether they are about to enter the pot it to watch their eyes, their faces and their body movements. Are they watching the other players? Are they counting or looking at their chips or have they already lost interest in the pot and are looking around the room?
They may be starring in to space, playing with their mobile phone or looking for a cocktail waitress! If you wait when the action is on you and don't act as soon as expected (even a few extra seconds can make a difference) they may do something to indicate that they are going to pass. You may have picked up a hand that you would consider raising with (an AJ or a pair of 88s for example) but a hand that you wouldn't call a re-raise with. If you know that there is a chance of a re-raise behind wouldn't you like to know in advance?
Bluffing (and showing bluffs)
Everybody has friends that they can rely on, friends who are reliable, friends who are always on time, do what they say and can be trusted. There are certain friends who you wouldn't hesitate to lend money to because you know 100% that they will pay you back and there are 'so called friends' who you wouldn't lend to. It all comes down to reputation. Reputations take time to build but can be very fragile and very easy lost. Let's apply this to poker!
Anyone who bets frequently and bluffs a lot will get away with bluffs sometimes but will succeed a much smaller percentage of the time than someone who has a reputation for playing good cards and usually showing down the best hands. We all know that playing the best cards will win more money than playing every hand so start building your reputation NOW! It may take a while but it will be worth it in the long run. If you manage to gain such a reputation, you may already have one, use it wisely. Don't let people know when you have used it and got away with stealing a pot full of chips by showing your busted flush or straight because this will damage your reputation and ability to bluff in the future. Choose the people (never bluff a fish) and the situations that you bluff in carefully and you will find this a very powerful tool in your poker play.
