Spanish to English: Obras de restauración General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Translation - English Bourdelle; Herakles and The Fruit: The first to be confirmed in both sculptures is that there patinas are affected. In the Heracles sculpture there are zones free of corrosion from some elements of assembling.
The restoring treatment consisted of cleaning both external and internal surfaces –in the case of Heracles- with high-pressurized water and comprised air. In the Heracles sculpture assembling elements were changed (bolts, pegs, and nails) that were corroded. Then, heating was applied (122ºF) with the purpose of assuring the total elimination of humidity and remaining signs of corrosion.
A first layer of protection with microcrystalline wax is applied and retouches of the clearer parts are performed with pigmented wax. Finally, a second wax layer is applied and a final gloss is given.
Mémorial de Caen museum: The Mémorial de Caen collection gathers thousands of objects related with the daily life of civilian and military people from all warring countries during the World War II. From there, the variety comes.
The year that we worked -2001 and 2002- the museum increases its surface by creating a new area mainly dedicated to the cultures of peace and Cold War.
Our job mainly was both the mechanic and chemical cleaning of each object and then takes inventory.
Auzon’s Gate: This gate, located in the commune of Auzon, is property of Saint-Laurent abbey (13th century). Despite it has never been restored, iron do not show any sign of active corrosion, but leather presents a really bad conservation state, moreover in its external part, where a thick layer of dust, grease, and other elements cover it. The wood, despite been rather damaged in the surface, looks well conserved.
Iron was mechanically cleaned, protecting metal with microcrystalline wax and final polishing. For the case of leather (external side) it was only possible to do it mechanically to conserve the quite fragile polychromic layer. To deliver flexibility, two layers of an emulsion that nourishes and rehydrates leather are applied. In the internal side of the door, cleaning was made with mild soap for leather, and then the special wax was applied.
Regarding to fastening of leather with glue, the zones were first softened with small pieces of spongy, and then an acrylic-vinyl adhesive was applied.
Cannons of Invalides Army: This restoring is made within the renovation project for the new presentation of a set of sixty cannons made of bronze, located in the honour yard of the museum.
The intervention consisted of cleaning with high-pressurized water, removal of filth layers and active corrosion placed through scalpel, flexible machine equipped with brushes, and metallic brushes. The object was heated to eliminate humidity and then it was waxed with microcrystalline wax, retouches with pigmented wax to get the set harmonized and finally it was polished.
Langres: In the first visit it is confirmed that a big amount of treasure objects are infected by funguses, as long as the textile that cover the bottom of the glass cabinets. An amount of 150 objects to repair is estimated.
Restoring of metal objects includes a chemical treatment, applying of microcrystalline wax and final polishing. Reliquary of Saint Léger: The Saint Léger church shelters the homonym Reliquary whose structure, made of wood and covered by metal –silver and brass looks exalted by bronze overlays.
The reliquary is in a poor state of conservation, due to previous, makeshift interventions and to it is heavily soiled because of a recent fire.
A dismantling of decorating pieces will be performed, along with general, deep cleaning of the metallic surface with chemical products. After that, a protecting layer will be applied to metal with microcrystalline wax and final polishing. Blavignac Fount: The three elements that form part of the higher part of the fount show a big amount of deposit of carbonate that origin from water (tartar). The patina is quite altered and the set is in a poor state of conservation.
Restoring included mechanical cleaning with high-pressurized water that allows eliminating tartar in determined zones located at the centre of the pool, but is useless to clean other pool areas, as it a chemical treatment was chosen that will eliminate or transform the original patina, leaving metal with a reddish tone.
The creation of a new one is an operation made only in extreme cases that, for the case of the fountain was the best solution from both an aesthetic and conservation point of view. The protection of metal was made with microcrystalline wax and harmonization of the patina colour was searched through microcrystalline wax dyed with pigments. Final polishing was applied. Yarur Candelabrum: This object is property of Jorge Yarur, director and founder of Fashion Museum in Santiago, Chile, who entrusts me its restoring. The candelabrum is made of soft metal (pewter) in the zones that correspond to the bronze leaves and flowers, and it is made of silvered bronze the tube that supports the structure.
It is presented with a broke on its higher zone (where candles are put) so it was necessary, in order to keep its structure, manufacturing a piece (screw) of silver, which join both zones. A chemical cleaning for silver is performed, and the zones of the tube where silvered is lost are silver-plated. Then microcrystalline wax is applied and it is polished. Yarur lanterns: Four lanterns made of copper and bronze, located outside the house, designed in the 50s for his summer house in Reñaca. First, dust was eliminated with brushes, and then every element was disassembled. It was necessary to cut the screws that join the protection bars of the glass globe, as they was molten due to corrosion formed over the years. The object was left one month in a bath of distilled water. Every week the water was changed, with the aim of remove the salt in the metal, which is the main corrosion factor. After that, the filth remains are eliminated with scalpel, brush and flexible. It was necessary to manufacture a piece of copper to cover the lowest part of the lantern, due to a strong corrosion that generated loss of metal in this area. This piece is adapted to the base and stay fix by pressure and, as it is movable in the future it will allow to be changed if necessary.
Applying of microcrystalline wax, manufacturing of sacrificial anodes, whose aim is slowing down the corrosion of metal, in the base of the object, as there humidity and rain water is deposited. Polishing and for a bigger surface protection, varnish is applied. An annual maintenance is recommended, due to outdoors and environment salinity.
Chartres Cathedral: The intervention consisted of: cleaning, taking photography, making inventories, and then sorting plaster casts sculptures from the cathedral, much important in case of losing structures that are in the highest area of the Chartres Cathedral. Cross from 13th century: This is a cross in poor state of conservation. It was necessary disassemble it and keep out its wood core in order to join its parts that was destroyed. Then, it was necessary to create a patina as much like as the original one. Unfortunately, I do not have the last picture in which Virgin and Christ are joined to the cross. Oradour: Due to the features of this place, and of that cars are outdoor, solutions are taken that allow slowing down the inevitable degradation of the cars.
Because of this, a manual cleaning is set with planes, brushes, fibreglass, scalpel, and abrasives; with the purpose of eliminate the corrosion products on the metal surface.
Microcrystalline wax was applied after heating metal (three layers). Then it is polished and isolated from the ground by platforms and guards.
Maintaining is recommended here. George Sand Castle: The collection is comprised by a set of objects, which are in the attic from 1999. It is in total disorder and counts on accessories, suits, hats, furniture, ornaments, little decoration stuff, and theatre furniture.
My job in this big operation consisted of mechanical cleaning with a soft broom, vacuum, and micro vacuum in the case of fragile, filthiest objects through sticks covered with cotton and soaked with solvent or soapy water, and then a thorough rinsing. Also, there are eventual consolidations and fixed, then there is photography and detailed account.
Henri IV Boxes: Six boxes in which it was necessary to disinfect the wood, with an antifungal treatment and post consolidation with Paraloide resin.
The cleaning of the lead leaves was chemical. It was shaped again due to its forced opening. Finally, to maintain the structure, shapes with PLASTAZOTE foam in within. Valloires Abbey: Bars located in the centre of the Chapel, from the second half of the 13th century in forged iron and re-annealed sheet.
Multiple points of corrosion are observed in the lower part of the bars. There are several decorative elements that have been deformed or disappeared. Painting is in poor state and gilding is altered due to its contact with the audience.
Corroded areas were mechanically treated with micro-brooms, brooms, heat guns, scalpel and passivation of corrosion by chemical bias. Deformed decoration elements were repaired and there the missing pieces were replaced.
The old painting is eliminated with: heat gun, broom, and scalpel. The surface is prepared by putting a layer of antirust to then apply asphalt-based paint (previous paint.)
Decorating elements are gilded with a sheet of “fine gold leafs”, with the technique known as “size” or “mordant”.
