La isla, enmedio del Mediterráneo occidental, era puesto avanzado contra el turco, y gran parte de las preocupaciones del rey –y de los funcionarios sardos– iban dirigidas a su protección. Las cartas del virrey no dejan de mencionar nunca el estado de las defensas de la costa, la necesidad de armamento y reparaciones, las actividades de los piratas turcos, tanto si solamente se avistan (que son innumerables) como si atacan, como en 1551, cuando Riola Sardo (Arriora) fue saqueada y sus habitantes tomados prisioneros para exigir rescate.

L’isola, nel mezzo del Mediterraneo occidentale, era un avamposto avanzato contro i turchi e gran parte delle preoccupazioni del re e dei funzionari sardi erano dirette alla sua protezione. Le lettere dei viceré non mancano di descrivere la situazione difensiva delle coste, la necessità di armamenti e riparazioni, le attività dei pirati turchi, sia che essi vengano solamente avvistati (la qual cosa succede spessissimo) sia che essi attacchino, come nel 1551, quando Riola Sardo (Arriora) fu saccheggiata e i suoi abitanti fatti prigionieri per richiedere un riscatto.
