Source text - Spanish Cuando se corrió la noticia de que el héroe había decidido dejar de hacer la guerra por su cuenta y que estaba dispuesto a servir a un buen rey le llegaron proposiciones de los principales reinos de la península. La más importante fue la de su viejo amigo, el rey Motámid, que entre el trato a que le sometía el rey Alfonso y las pretensiones territoriales del rey de Granada andaba tan preocupado que ni tiempo tenía para escribir sus famosos poemas. Le envió embajadores cargados de regalos y le mandó decir:
-No soporto el orgullo del cristiano, ni la estupidez de su adversario. Si vienes a mi reino te mandaré construir un gran palacio igual que el mío, a la otra orilla del río, te nombraré comandante y excepto en las artes y en las letras, en todo lo demás mandarás tanto como yo y nada se hará sin tu conformidad.
Los caballeros del Cid recibieron la noticia con gran alegría por el buen recuerdo que guardaban de las delicias a orillas del Gualdalquivir. Pero en cambio, la reina Constanza, que había hecho gran amistad con Jimena, le mandó decir:
-Si te pones al servicio del rey Motámid a no mucho tardar tendrás que enfrentarte con mi señor, el rey Alfonso. Piénsalo bien.
La reina Constanza era mujer esperanzada y prudente, que confiaba en la reconciliación del rey y de su mejor servidor, que redundaría en beneficio del reino.
Rodrigo Díaz obedeció la indicación de la reina, y con gran disgusto de sus caballeros rechazó la propuesta del rey Motámid. Éste, no obstante, insistió en una carta de su puño y letra en la que decía que si su reino no podía acogerse a la sombra benéfica del Cid, tendría que buscar protección en otra parte.
Así quedaron las cosas por un tiempo. El Cid no quería tampoco encontrarse con Alfonso, pero sí servirlo porque así convenía a su religión y sus buenas costumbres.
Translation - English When the news spread that the hero had decided to stop making war on his own account and that he was willing to serve a good king, he received proposals from the most important kingdoms in the peninsula. The most noteworthy was that of King Motámid, his old friend who, torn between the way he was being treated by King Alfonso and the territorial claims of the King of Granada, was so concerned that he hardly had any time to write his famous poems. He sent him ambassadors laden with gifts and the following message:
"I can't stand neither Christian pride nor you adversary's stupidity. If you come to my kingdom, I will have you built a great palace just like mine on the other side of the river, I will name you Commander, and you will have the same authority as I do; nothing will be done without your consent, except for the matters concerning the arts."
It was with great joy that the knights of the Cid received these news, for they kept a good memory of the many delights awaiting on the bank of the Guadalquivir. But instead, Queen Constanza, who had become close friends with Jimena, said:
"If you start serving King Motámid, soon enough you will have to face my lord, King Alfonso. Think it through."
Queen Constanza was a prudent and hopeful woman who trusted on the reconciliation of the King and his best server, which would prove beneficial for the whole kingdom.
Rodrigo Díaz obeyed the Queen's instruction and rejected King Motámid's offer, much to the dismay of his knights. The King, nevertheless, insisted on a letter written by his own hand, which said that if his kingdom wasn't to take refuge under the Cid's charitable shadow, he would have to find protection elsewhere.
Thus remained things for a while. The Cid did not want to meet Alfonso, but he did want to serve him for that was in accordance to his religion and good customs.
