English to Italian: l'università come azienda (testo integrale: 13 pagine) General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English In accord with the deistic ideas of Thomas Jefferson and many other founding fathers, Christian Deists established many of the first American colleges in the later seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Like the Enlightenment philosophers who inspired them, they believed that the myths of traditional Christianity were not literally true. Christ was not the son of God; he performed no miracles, he did not rise from the dead. For them, God was the “Great Engineer” or “Divine Mathematician,” who created the universe not according to Genesis, but according to the laws revealed by Newton—himself a deist. Science and religion were neither separate nor opposed, as we often think today. Consequently, Christian ministers were often amateur scientists, for rightly understood, science was theology, the study of God’s handiwork. Only in our time has intelligent design become associated with reactionaries and fundamentalists.
English to Italian: Contraddizioni convergenti (testo integrale: 15 pagine) General field: Other Detailed field: Philosophy
Source text - English As I view them in conjunction, then, American Studies and Comparative Literature configure an isomorphic paradox. Their trajectories at this moment represent a convergence in contradiction due, as I have already suggested, to powerful, worldwide forces of integration. The human sciences studying globalization have identified this dynamic as a one-world impulse that differentiates societal, economic, political movements and cultural contexts not as a function of relational plurality, but for the sake of rationalizations whose integrative impetus moves principally toward homogeneity, uniformity, and incorporation. The resultant phenomenon from this development has often been referred to as “MacWorld.”
