Source text - English "Daddy's going to kill you. He's going to kill you," she said. I wasn't listening, though. I was thinking about something else -- something crazy. "You know what I'd like to be?" I said. "You know what I'd like to be. I mean if I had my goddam choice?" "What? Stop swearing." "You know that song 'If a body catch a body comin' through the rye'? I'd like--" "It's 'If a body meet a body coming through the rye!'" old Phoebe said. "It's a poem. By Robert Burns." "I know it's a poem by Robert Burns." She was right, though. It is "If a body meet a body coming through the rye." I didn't know it then, though. "I thought it was 'If a body catch a body,' " I said. "Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around -- nobody big, I mean -- except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff -- I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy." Old Phoebe didn't say anything for a long time. Then, when she said something, all she said was, "Daddy's going to kill you."

Ella tenía razón. Sí que es “Si un cuerpo encuentra a otro cuerpo yendo entre el centeno”. Pero yo en aquel momento no lo sabía.
-Creía que era “Si un cuerpo atrapa a otro cuerpo” –dije-. Sea como sea, siempre me imagino un montón de niños jugando a algo en un enorme campo de centeno y tal. Miles de niños pequeños, y no hay nadie con ellos; quiero decir nadie mayor; menos yo. Y estoy parado al borde de un precipicio alucinante. Lo que tengo que hacer es atrapar a todos los que van hacia el precipicio. Quiero decir que si están corriendo sin mirar a donde van, tengo que aparecer y agarrarlos. Me gustaría hacer eso todo el tiempo. Sería el guardián entre el centeno. Ya sé que parece una locura, pero es la única cosa que me gustaría ser. Sé que es de locos.

El mundo era tan reciente, que muchas cosas carecían de nombre, y para mencionarlas había que señalarías con el dedo. Todos los años, por el mes de marzo, una familia de gitanos desarrapados plantaba su carpa cerca de la aldea, y con un grande alboroto de pitos y timbales daban a conocer los nuevos inventos. Primero llevaron el imán. Un gitano corpulento, de barba montaraz y manos de gorrión, que se presentó con el nombre de Melquiades, hizo una truculenta demostración pública de lo que él mismo llamaba la octava maravilla de los sabios alquimistas de Macedonia. Translation - English Many years later, as he was facing the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to see the ice for the first time. Back then, Macondo was a village of twenty houses of adobe and cane, all built on the bank of a river of limpid water that flowed over a bed of polished stones, as white and enormous as prehistoric eggs. The world was so recent that many things lacked a name, and in order to refer to them they had to be pointed at. Every year, around the month of March, a family of ragged gypsies would plant a tent close to the village, and with a great racket of whistles and kettledrums they would put forward the new inventions. First, they brought the magnet. A hefty gypsy with an untamed beard and sparrow hands, who went by the name of Melquiades, put on a gruesome public demonstration of what he himself called the eighth wonder of the wise alchemists of Macedonia. He went from house to house dragging two metal ingots, and everyone got a fright when they saw pots, pans, tongs, and small stoves tumble from their places, and wood planks and beams creak for the desperation of nails and screws trying to come unnailed, and even long lost objects appeared where they had been searched for the most, and were dragged in turbulent disbandment after Melquiades’ magical iron pieces.
