NEW YORK March 25, 2009: UrFilez, a revolutionary new music download and social networking service for the Middle East and wider MENASA region, launched today in Bahrain, in a joint announcement with its founding telco partner, Zain.
UrFilez has been developed by leading new-media entrepreneurs from the US to make music downloading more accessible to customers in the region, and to focus on the vast pool of local and regional talent that has been overlooked by major western labels.
The launch of UrFilez, announced in partnership with Zain, means that music lovers who have previously had to rely on a range of largely illegal ‘pirate’ services will now be able to download favourite artists with their computers or through their mobile phones. This key innovation does away with the need for a local credit card for Zain users, a requirement that has prevented other download services from successfully entering the region.
Coupling this unique offer with the ability of UrFilez customers to recommend and share their musical tastes marks UrFilez out as a champion of the vibrant musical culture in the Gulf, the wider Middle East, Africa and Asia – a pool of talent that has been overlooked by major recording and music download companies until now.
UrFilez already carries more than 5,000 local artists, including Nancy Ajram, Hayfa Wahbi, Ragheb Alama, Rashed Al Majed, Miami Band, Samo Zain, Samira Said, Amr Mostafa and Esam Karika. It also has a team dedicated to scouting out and signing new talent across the region.
UrFilez’s proprietary technology means that it is not just music lovers who will make recommendations and introduce friends to cross-cultural trends. UrFilez’s system can actually recognize beats and melodies from one genre and suggest similar styles from another.
