Let us first consider Tabor's portrait of John the Baptist. In Tabor's view, John saw himself as carrying out the mission announced in Isaiah 40:3 and Malachi 3:1. While he may have spent some time at Qumran, and he used the same texts that those Essenes did to envision his mission, his approach to the coming conflagration was not to withdraw, purify, and thereby save oneself (as the Essenes' was) but rather to call the nation to repentance and baptism in preparation for what was to follow. John took a more extroverted, the Essenes a more introverted approach to the interpretations of those prophetic texts.
