От продажи хлеба у купцов скапливались миллиарды, которые оседали в самарских банках. Таким образом, Хлебная площадь была началом развития и становления города. От площади берет начало одна из первых улиц: ныне улица А.Толстого, в прошлом улица Казанская.
До революции она состояла в основном из дворянских и купеческих особняков. Средствами их владельцы располагали достаточными, поэтому и поныне эти дома украшают улицу, вызывая удивление у гостей и жителей города.
Посмотрите, слева жилой трехэтажный дом светло – зеленого цвета под номером 30, длинные стрельчатые окна и высокими шпилями, глазированной плиткой. Этот дом известен как дом Субботиной-Мартинсон.
Хлебная торговля способствовала быстрому развитию и росту города. Наш город сравнивали с европейскими и называли «Поволжским Новым Орлеаном», «Русским Чикаго». Все это послужило основанием для образования Самарской губернии. В правые окна мы видим 3-х этажное здание зелёного цвета, ныне здесь располагается корпус Самарского медицинского университета, а ранее в этом доме в январе 1851 года была торжественно провозглашена Самарская губерния, согласно которому Самара приобрела новый статус и новый герб. Этот дом принадлежал купцу Макке, а позже в нём разместилось реальное училище имени императора Александра Благословенного, одно из самых лучших по тем временам в Поволжье. Среди известных выпускников - государственный деятель и учёный советского периода Глеб Кржижановский, лауреат Нобелевской премии Николай Семёнов, писатель Алексей Толстой, о чём свидетельствуют установленные здесь мемориальные доски.
На этой улице сохранились и другие старинные постройки, многие из которых ожидают реставрации. Слева вы видите 2х-этажное жилой дом желтого цвета. Это здание бывшего Дворянского (Благородного) собрания, где дворянами решались вопросы жизни города.
Ярким представителем Самары купеческой является дом купца Сурошникова. При повороте, в левые окна, вы можете видеть двухэтажное здание, с трехэтажной угловой частью, отделанное голубой глазурованной плиткой. Построен в 1909 году архитектором Федором Шехтелем. Сейчас здесь располагается Управление Федерального Обеспечения Министерства Обороны.
Напротив двухэтажное каменное здание с налетом «патины времени» коричневого цвета. В основании — массивные камни, напоминает северный стиль. Это один из немногих памятников культуры в Самаре, фасад которого не претерпел изменений со дня строительства. Это бывший дом купца Шихобалова.
Translation - English Development of Provincial Town of Samara.
Milliards of rubles earned by Samara merchants on selling wheat flour accumulated in Samara banks. That is why The Khlebnaya Square ("khleb" means "bread" in Russian) is the starting point of the town development. One of the first streets of Samara takes off here from The Khlebnaya Square: now it's Alexey Tolstoy Street, former Kazanskaya street.
Before the socialist revolution of 1917 there were only noblemen and merchant mansions on this street. The owners of these mansions had enough money to build gorgeous houses which still ornament this street.
Pay your attention to the house number 30 on the left, the 3-storey mansion of the lettuce-green colour. The mansion with lancet windows, walls tiled with glace tile and roof topped with high steeples. This house is known as The House of Madame Subbotina-Martinson, a daughter of a rich and famous Samara merchant.
Samara was one of the richest grain-growing regions. Due to grain trade Samara became a rapidly growing town. It was compared to fast-developing American cities such as New Orleans and Chicago and it was called the Volga New Orleans and The Russian Chicago. As a result, Samara Province was established. On the right you can see a 3-storey building of the greenish colour – now it is one of the campus buildings of Samara Medical University but earlier, in January 1851, The Province of Samara was declared in triumph in this building. According to this declaration Samara obtained a new status and a new emblem (coat of arms). The owner of this building was a merchant named Makke, but later this building became a site for a non-classical secondary school named after The Emperor Aleksander The Blessed. It was one of the best ones at those times in the Volga region. Among its famous pupils was Gleb Krzhizhanovsky, a statesman and a scientist of the Soviet period, Nikolay Semenov – Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, Alexey Tolstoy – a famous Russian and Soviet writer. Memorial plates mounted on the building testify this.
There are other old-fashioned buildings on this street. Many of them are waiting for the restoration. On the left you can see a 2-storey residential house of the yellowish colour. This is a former Hall of the Nobility, where noblemen considered matters of the town-living.
The bright representative of The Merchant Samara is a house of merchant Suroshnikov. On the left you can see a 2-storey building with a 3-storeyed angle part tiled with blue glace tile. It was built in 1909 by architect Fyodor Shekhtel. Now the Office of Federal Supply of the Ministry of Defence is located here.
On the opposite there is a 2-storey stone dark-brown building patinized by Time. There are massive stones in the basement that reminds the northern style. This is a former house of merchant Shikhobalov. It is remarkable that the front of the building has not had any changes since the day of construction.
