English to French: Psychology of Mathematics General field: Science
Translation - French The present Psychology of Mathematics places itself in the scope of what H. Blumenberg – when investigating other domains of knowledge than mathematics – called a metaphorology. It investigates the essential affectivity attached to the activity of doing mathematics; it articulates this affectivity with a rhetoric, in the same way Aristotle made the reflection on passions into a major chapter of his Rhetoric. By varying approach angles and considered periods, the author strives to show the non-conceptual aspects which yet contribute to conceptual activity, without ever letting any mysticism account for his research on mathematics and physics. It is possible to reflect on the non-conceptual factors acting in mathematics in a rational way: this book is willing to prove it.
