Quite the opposite Sep 23, 2007

I've always enjoyed reading, especially comics. I used to be surrounded by comics, and my parents had to push me literally out of home to incourage me interacting with other kids. I was kinda of a loner (still am, I believe

Books from the grocery store Sep 23, 2007

My mom used to come home from the groceries with a book for me every week or two. I don't know why she did this with me and not with my sisters... Maybe she saw I was naturally inclined.

The real reason why I became a book consumer is, however, not as much the fact that my mom would put books between my hands. I think it was more because I regularly saw her sitting in the living room with a book and her glasses on. I guess, as a child, when you see someone enjoying an activity, your

The real reason why I became a book consumer is, however, not as much the fact that my mom would put books between my hands. I think it was more because I regularly saw her sitting in the living room with a book and her glasses on. I guess, as a child, when you see someone enjoying an activity, your first reaction is to think that that activity must be enjoyable if you see that person practice it so often. We also had a 32-inch color TV (which was a luxury back then), but it always came second to reading.

Those were the good old days... Now, it's down to CAT tools, internet, newspaper and letters. I wish I had more time...

EDIT: No, Catherine, I think you are probably with or close to the majority here. Do a forum search, you'll see that most of us prefer the original when it comes to books and movies. Some ideas are just nerly impossible to render accurately in another language. But some translators are doing a great job of it - just not all of them, sadly (see the translation into Czech of the sixth Harry Potter book making waves on the internet).

In memoriam
Not Soon Enough Sep 23, 2007

My parents, both teachers, started teaching me to read as soon as I started kindergarten shortly before age 5. As far as I can recall I had practically no learning curve at all, I was reading immediately.

Unknown to them, I had been desperate to learn for a couple of years already.

No longer young, I can still read without glasses.

I read my first book... Sep 23, 2007

at the age of 8. I had read countless children books and stories before that. I remember getting upset with the school's librarian because I was allowed to take home "only" three books for my two-weeks winter holiday.

And yes, it was after my parents example. They had stacks of books everywhere in their bedroom!

I also remember that the worst punishment my parents could give me was to forbid me of reading for a while.

I can't remember learning to read Sep 24, 2007

as far as I know, I learned to read before I was 4 years old. Don't know who taught me.
As a kid, I read anything I could lay hands on.
I am also a very fast reader, so pretty soon, the youth section of the public library was exhausted. I borrowed my parents' card and carried on with the rest of the library.
It was almost an addiction, and it still is, really.
Nothing gets my attention the way a good book does - 100%, until the very end. Sometimes I forget to eat or slee

My parents didn't need to encourage me. They sometimes checked to see whether I was really sleeping at times when I was sent to bed and had to go to school the next day. They knew I wouldn't put my book away unless they told me to....

Happy reading!

@ Catherine: I prefer to read originals too

while growing up.. Sep 24, 2007

Özden Arıkan wrote about..."discussing books, reciting poems, talking literary stuff and also trivia about authors.." That was definitively a part of my life while growing up.

My mother who is a lawyer, poet & journalist used to bring many friends home, and they usually were writers, poets, intellectuals, etc. I am a single child, so I interacted with them quiet often. I deeply cherish these memories.

My great aunt, my caretaker while my mom worked outside the home, used to read poetry to me, she had me memorize poems even before I knew how to read.

My mom says that when I learned how to read, I would not stop reading, and that I even took up reading street signs as a distraction.

What a nice post, it allows us to bring back our early years, and for a moment connect in a more conscious manner with our essence and our core. J

As with so many people here, the problem was more trying to stop me reading! Not that they ever did- my parents are both prodigious readers too. So there was neither encouragement nor discouragement; reading was as much a part of my life as breathing. I learned aged about 3 - one of my earliest memories is lying stretched out in front of the fire, eating my breakfast and reading the paper.

of course true parentism is to encourge....... Sep 24, 2007

no doubt parents encouragement during your study plays a vital role.someone's chances of success multiplies when parents encourage.
same is true in the cases of divorce parents.
it s very dreadful .all the doors to success most of the times closed when you do not have some one to help you,to encourage you.
and parents are the people who can really help you by standing your side

Not at all. A translation of a literary work is never the same as the original. It is indeed an approximation at best.

I guess they were busy with their own lives ... oh well.

But, I started reading and enjoying it only because my school was really good at encouraging us to read in both Spanish and English. So, it developed into a very good habit that I still keep.

Two years ago I asked a friend to send me Narraciones Panameñas, a little book that I read at school, she found me one - second hand - aww, the memories.

My kids have buckets of books that they read or we read to them, specially at bedtime. Reading is so good!

I read "Gone with the wind" (spanish version) when I was 11 years old. I love reading, although now I have less time than before, because before I was able to read a book in some hours, whereas now I am delayed sometimes weeks, between the work and the children, I do not have left long time to read.
My parents, but mainly my mother, she likes to read so much as to me.

In fact my parents never bought me toys, but books. Shame that they never thought about buying foreign language books...
Anyway, I wanted my mother to teach me reading before going to primary school, but for some reasons she was convinced it wouldn't have been a good thing for me, so I had to wait (in any case I learnt very quickly, and was often bored at primary school, as I finished my assignements in no-time). Then when it was my sister's turn, I tried to teach her reading before going to school, but she wasn't that much interested in that...

One thing I remember well of my childhood: I used to watch cartoons when I was 3 or 4, and I was always asking my mother to read titles, names and credits that appear at the end of the episode (basically everything that can be read). She was patient and always read that for me, even though she had read that many times before. Then I started to watch a Japanese cartoon, with Japanese writing at the end, and asked "Mum, please read what's written!", and she kept saying she couldn't, and I was puzzled: "But you can usually read, how comes you can't read this one?" I didn't realize for a while that there are different languages in the world!

I think this poll is very interesting.
I really believe that reading can make you a "better person" regarding general culture and personal expresion, etc.

My parents never told me anything about reaing but they would always read the papers and there were lots of books at home. so me and my siblings naturally turned to them and started collecting our own books according to our personality.
