I am amazed! Jun 17, 2007

When I saw the results of the poll and saw a 70 % of people who answered 'no'. I expected at least half the translators out there having pain in their necks and wrists...
My answer was "yes, I used to" but since I learnt to use my shortcuts I have quite minimized the use of the much to be dreaded mouse.

I think so, in my right hand... Jun 17, 2007

After a long job which required more use of the touchpad and less of the keyboard. The only way you can use the touchpad with the laptop on your lap is to turn your right hand in a very unnatural twisted way. I was really worried I may not be able to use my hand for a while.

It would have been much better Jun 17, 2007

if the meanings of this term 'Carpal Tunnel Syndrome' was also given in the Poll sentence, because it is very likely that many of us don't know what does it mean.

Regards,

Yes, I had it quite badly years ago. My husband was then in the office furniture business and much involved with ergonomics. We adjusted the height of my desk/keyboard/screen/seat to suit me exactly, and I've never had it since, though I tap away just as fast and furiously as ever. That seems to be the secret. No more back aches or neck aches either.
Regards,
Jenny.
Carpal tunnel syndrome comes from straining the hands / wrists by using them repeatedly in an unnatural way, leading to numbness and tingling in the hands and sometimes pain in the upper arm. A form of repetitive strain injury, I think.

I still suffer from it Jun 17, 2007

I have suffered from it several times. Sometimes, I have to hold my right hand in order type or press a mouse key; I have also !acquired" some skill in typing using only the left hand (at a snail speed, but it works.)

What is worst for me is that often I have TCS and fibromyalgia at the same time....

What is worst for me is that often I have TCS and fibromyalgia at the same time. That's really painful.

I changed to wireless ergonomic keyboard and mouse and it has really helped with my TCS strain.

Regards,

aburiaz, you are so right. Like Elena I cannot believe 70% said "NO". Misunderstanding or ignorance could be responsible to this high percentage of negatives.

If you are a professional in this business for some time, and constantly using the wrist in a manner we do, you would have this dreaded disease from time to time.

Problem with this grossly limited-space poll though, is there is not enough room to explain what carpal tunnel syndrome is.

Not anymore Jun 18, 2007

I used to suffer from constant pain in my wrists and arms but after switching to speech recognition software, the difference is really remarkable, the pain is completely gone.

Yes, I do...ouch Jun 18, 2007

I actually suffer from it quite a lot at the moment (in both wrists at the same time...ouch). My GP suggested a cast (at least on the side where the pain is worst) last week in order to give it a rest, but unfortunately, I'm completely up to my neck with work, so I have to finish my assignments first before even considering that. Painkillers are my *best friends* at the moment(

Thinking of using Dragon just to minimize risk or for comfort. It might also be a nice variety while operating the pc. May I ask Claudia, do you know if Dragon V9 is suitable or perhaps there is nicer or cheaper software available that you know of.

When even healthy computer screens were blue with white Courier text, and the latest in wordprocessing was WordPerfect 5.1....

(And THAT takes you back a year or two...)

An infuriating Danish instructor insisted that all his students should learn to use the short cuts. He actually removed the mouse from each computer for the first month!

And in those days it worked very well without. There were short cuts for everything if you made the effort to learn them.

He also made students adjust their chairs and do exercises in coffee breaks - those were more important than the coffee, he insisted.

I was one of those lucky students! We muttered and told him that just because typists with heavy Remingtons developed backache and aches and pains in their wrists and shoulders... that did not mean we would in the new computer age.

He said he knew better, and anyone who did not keep his rules was sent out of class for the rest of the day!

Maybe that was fifteen years ago or more...

When I get a job that can't be done without a lot of mouse work, I do get a twinge in my wrist, and if I work for more than an hour or so with my backup computer, which for lack of space is on a non-optimal table, then I remember him, and go through his coffee break routines an extra time.

I've been grateful to him ever since. The funny thing is that I can hear his voice in my head but I can't remember his name!

So no, I don't have carpal tunnel syndrome, thanks to a stubborn lecturer who insisted on teaching good computer habits!

surprising cure Jun 18, 2007

I had a severe case of carpal tunnel many years ago in my right hand (wrist to be precise) but amazingly since becomming a freelancer it has not come back. I don't know what happened, but I went from barely being able to hold my head up on my right hand to free of pain (knock knock). I think I worry more about my eyesight in these days of laptop screens....

thanks for the diagnosis Jun 18, 2007

I just want to thank Chun Un for giving me this free diagnosis.

I began to suffer from this illness many months ago, and the closest I could get to diagnosing it was that it is a form of repetitive strain ( I even knew that from another poll).

The problem with me is not just feeling the pain while on the job, I feel it 24-7. It causes me insomnia. I struggle every night to sleep while feeling this pain in my wrist (especially the right wrist). I tried some tips about co

The problem with me is not just feeling the pain while on the job, I feel it 24-7. It causes me insomnia. I struggle every night to sleep while feeling this pain in my wrist (especially the right wrist). I tried some tips about correct hand positions on the key board, and it got a little better. But it is still a big problem for me.

Anyway, after I've seen your poll, I "google-wiki'ed" the term and found that it matches with my symptoms. I just printed the English wiki page about it, hoping it can give me tips on how to eliminate it.

Thanks also to the colleagues who shared their experiences with this syndrome, and their ways of treating it.

Amazed too... Jun 18, 2007

I also expected more people having that problem.

Fortunately I never suffered it.

Maybe because I learned to use a computer VERY LONG time ago, when keyboard shortcuts were the only time/life saver you could use (no mouse yet). Like Christine, I used WordPerfect 5.1 (and actually was a real enthusiast of it, and my colleagues used to laugh at me using 3-4-... key combinations do to Idunnowhat).

Probably that's it!!
