I've just started using Windows 2003 and the latest new Trados... but have had this problem occasionally with W2000 and Trados 6.5

After some 30-odd repeats of the sentence, Trados still says 98% match, -2 for formatting, which seems to make no difference, but now it inserts a hard line break in mid sentence.

The sentence is:
Ca. 18 maanader vid -18oC.

Trados inserts a line break after Ca.

There are at least 30 more of these in the text... Surely I don't have to take them all out manually after cleanup?

Most probably you saved the sentence one with manual line break Mar 8, 2007

It is not possible to have a "hard return" in the middle of the sentence, unless something went wrong.
You can simply delete the TU from your translation memory and save it again without any breaks.
To delete a TU open the corresponding segment in Word. While Workbench shows you the match right click on one of the flags in WB (does not matter, which one you take - for source or target language) and chose "Delete translation unit(s)" - "Current only". Now you can save it again.

Not after a hard line break... Mar 8, 2007

Expand segment never works (for me at least) where there is a hard line break, whether it was in the original file or Trados decides to add it.

This is an abbreviation (for circa = approximately) in the middle of a sentence, and the line break has to be removed after cleanup if I can't get Trados to stop putting it in!

This time I have simply removed the full stop after ca. each time, and it works as a fuzzy match to get me through my job, but I'd love to have a 'real'

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Oh, first now I've got what you mean Mar 8, 2007

Trados does not insert any line break, it simply stops after the abbreviation "ca."? If so, go to setup, segmentation rules and click on "user lists". Then enter "ca." (must be entered so) in the abbreviation list. From then on Trados will recognise "ca." as an abbreviation and stop segmenting after that.

No, Trados inserts a line break! Mar 8, 2007

I simply do not understand, because if I 'restore source', then it still leaves the unwanted line break (it shows in the codes as a black P turned mirror-wise)

I once had a job where it did this and then said 'end of paragraph missing', and refused to close the next segment. If I added an extra line break or removed the 'new section' from the source, then everything worked fine again.. but that was with Trados 6.5.

This time there is no new section, just an empty line, then another line that goes fine.

The text is a list of frozen food products with instructions for keeping them frozen, percentages of fat/carbohydrate/protein etc. So most of it comes up with variations again and again.

Multiterm wil not work either, but I'll fix that at the weekend!!

Please try to use Tageditor instead Mar 8, 2007

Just for an experiment - open a clean source (monolingual) file in Tageditor, search the sentence where line break is inserted in Word and try there. It looks like there is something more in the source sentence what you cannot see.

You can also mark one of such sentences in your file and send me the file at info at czopik dot com, so I can take a look what happens.
Usually Trados does not tolerate any hard returns in the segments.

I'll try at the weekend... Mar 8, 2007

Thanks very much for your suggestions!

But I have to deliver this job in 8 hours and have not slept much the last couple of nights... Then I have another small job to do tomorrow too!

I closed down the computer, re-started, exported the TM as txt, and created a completely new one. Then i re-imported it, and it seems to be working...

Otherwise I might be able to import it to my old computer and finish there. I hope i don't need to - it lost the dongle and we

Otherwise I might be able to import it to my old computer and finish there. I hope i don't need to - it lost the dongle and went into demo mode last time someone sent me a TM from a later version, but that was a whole TM (5 files), not a txt. export.

I love Trados when it works...

a word of caution Mar 9, 2007

I love Trados when it works...

We all do ... I have noted, you have a 6.5 version - which in Enbglish would fall between Chausser and Shakespeare (g). Jerzy fielded the questions in his usual brilliant way but were I the one to make suggestions (and that could apply to a lot of other colleagues) , I would answer in the context of Word 2003 and Trados 7.5 (or whatever the latest number is).

And that CAN cost you time, nerves, and midnight oil.

regards

So ... why not upgrade in one of those less stressful weeks?
