I am currently working for a client who uses SDLX and who asked me to regularly work on ITD files.
I am not very happy to buy yet another CAT tool, no matter how user-friendly it is.
However, before I give my client a final decision, I would like to ask what the main difference between the Standard and Professional versions are.

I had a look at the comparison table on SDL's website, and from what I can see, Standard comes without SDL Apply and SDL Analyse. Okay, I can imagine what SDL Analyse is all about, but what is SDL Apply good for?
Does SDLX Lite still exist? I searched the SDL website but all I found is a reference to SDL Elite. From what I can see, my client needs Elite to provide me with an ITD that I can use with SDLX Lite. What advantages/disadvantages does the Lite version have over the Standard/Professional version?
Any input appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Sonja,
"SDL Apply" is the batch translation module which enables you to translate several ITD files at a time using one or more TMs. This is sometimes very handy, and as a side-effect, it spits out a detailed CSV file with statistics for each file (same as with Analyse module). So basically, it is analysing and pre-translating at one go, for as many files and with as many TMs you wish.

SDLX Lite is basically nothing but the SDL Edit module, which is the Editor used for translation. You can open and apply TMs and Termbases, but that's it. This is mainly meant for agencies who want to use SDLX at their end and provide their freelancers with a free editor to do their jobs. The agency buys SDLX Elite and creates files that can be edited in SDLX Lite. I'm not sure whether SDL will continue to support SDLX Lite. As far as I know, they had plans to drop it.
One suggestion: As opposed to Trados, SDL offers a fully functional 30-day free trial version. Download, install and use it for 30 days without any restrictions and at zero cost.
Best regards,

Hallo Sonja,

When you have many project.files to translate, use SDL Apply to apply one or more TMs to batches of ITDs at the same time. A TM can contain translations for a single language or for several languages and the ITDs in the batch can be for a single or several target languages.
If you use Machine Translation software, this can be integrated with SDLX.
Typically, you would batch translate the ITD files that were automatically generated when a project was created, but it is possible to batch translate files of any of the supported file types.
You can use the Wizard or you can enter the information on the tabs.
Upgrade note: SDL Apply was previously called SDL Translate.
To apply translation to multiple files using the Wizard
1 Do one of these:
· From the SDLX Switchboard choose Translate, Apply TMs in batch mode.
· If SDL Apply is open, from any tab choose Wizard.
2 The SDL Apply Wizard - Files screen appears. Complete the screen and choose Next.
3 When all the screens have been completed, click Finish.
To apply translation to multiple files manually
1 On the Files tab, select
a the source language and encoding.
b the files to translate.
2 On the Translation Memories tab, select one or more TMs that will be applied to the files.
3 On the Options tab, select the required values.
4 On the Reporting tab, select
a the path and file name of the log file (this is mandatory)
b optionally, export statistics (as a CSV file) about each of the files that will be translated.
5 Click Apply on the lower part of the screen (this is accessible from any tab).

Sonja,
I will try to answer your questions as briefly as possible.

SDL Apply is used to apply the TM (translation memory) to 'pre translate' the text. This can be done, as explained by Genevi , on multiple files at a time or
on a single file. I use this function mostly after I open a single file for translation.

on a single file. I use this function mostly after I open a single file for translation.
Q. Does SDLX Lite still exist?
Should be. Because this is one of the main reason why Agencies buy Elite version. The Lite version is a free tool to be used by freelance translators for
translating the files prepared by the Elite version of SDLX by the Project Managers. Only files prepared by Elite version can be translated with Lite version.
Q. What advantages/disadvantages does the Lite version have over the Standard/Professional version?
The Lite version can be used only to translate the files which are already processed ('prepared') for translation. SDLX converts all files, of any format DOC, Excel, XML etc, into a .ITD files. These files can be translated using their EDIT module. The Lite version cannot process the files to create the ITD files. It can be used only to edit/translate the ITD files created by the Elite version and returned as ITD files.
The Standard/Professional version can process the file (doc, excel, XML etc) to create ITD files, translate them using Edit (the SDLX editor) and create back the original files. But, the ITD files created by S/P version cannot be opened in Lite version. In other words, S/P is a complete but Stand alone version of SDLX.
The Elite does all the above, plus the files created by it can be edited on Lite version. Therefore, this is more useful for agencies to distribute the work to freelance translators.
Hope this helps.

First of all thanks to all of you for answering.
I do have the trial version, and will definitely try it.
I think I'll probably go for the Lite version, if SDL decides to continue it. Otherwise, my client mentioned that they still use Trados for some jobs, and I might be able to send them uncleaned files.
We'll see.
Again, thanks for your kind help.
