Since most of the payments I receive come from clients within Europe, bank transfers are the most convenient method for me since I don't have to expect hefty charges.
I used to like Moneybookers but since when they froze my account in order to force me into a time-consuming account verification process, I closed my account.
I do accept Paypal in exceptional cases, but prefer not to due to the fees they charge. | | | Steven Capsuto United States Local time: 22:18 Member (2004) Spanish to English + ... Depends on a lot of factors | Jan 19, 2011 |
It depends on the nature of the job, where the other party is located, and whether I'm sending or receiving funds.
If it's a corporate client with a U.S. bank account, I much prefer a check. If it's a local individual client, I prefer cash. If it's an individual client who doesn't live locally, I prefer Paypal.

When sending money overseas, I generally use Paypal since sending a bank transfer is expensive, and since Moneybookers allows you to receive money in the U.S. but not send from the U.S. (at least that was their policy the last time I looked into it).

I have used PayPal, but I am really getting tired of their ongoing imposition of limitations on my account. How many times must I prove that I am me and live at my address? The call it ongoing maintenance, but it is more like ongoing harassment to a customer. | | | I prefer wire transfer or cheque | Jan 19, 2011 |
I personnaly feel wire transfer is the best way to receive funds. Hardly any cost for most of the countries. Secondly I prefer cheques. That also with very low cost if within same country. last and least, I have to receive funds mostly by Paypal.
thanks all for your valuable commnets.

Most of the payments I receive are either direct deposits into my checking account or checks. I don't really have a preference. My bank has a drive-through ATM to make envelope-free deposits, and even some banks (not mine) have this cool system where you can deposit your check through an image app from your smartphone at home. I prefer checks from companies within the U.S. because there are no fees. For companies abroad, I prefer PayPal. | | | Chun Un Macau Member (2007) English to Chinese + ... Bank transfer | Jan 20, 2011 |
For clients with large jobs:
Bank transfer
For clients with small jobs:
Moneybookers is the first choice and PayPal only if the client doesn't use Moneybookers.
(I accepted cash once from an interpreting client but this doesn't happen often enough.) | | | Henry Hinds United States Local time: 20:18 English to Spanish + ... In memoriam
In the USA we deal with checks, and for in-person contact with the client, sometimes cash. Occasionally I have received wire transfers, that is also OK.

We used to work a lot with an American company who paid by cheque, and while my bank did not charge ridiculous amounts to cash it (only €5 per cheque), it did take 30 days to clear it- plus the euro-dollar exchange rate does not seem to be improving, so we stopped working with them. Currently we only work with European clients who wire us the money at the agreed time and we have had to pay no charges so far for that (we always receive what we invoiced them for). Paypal is practical and quick, but their rates are too high, so we don't take jobs that only offer Paypal as method of payment. ▲ Collapse
It seems to me that in Europe, cheques are an endangered species, if not extinct - nobody seems to work with them at all... I may be wrong, but I've never been offered a cheque by European clients. And I have never, ever, written a cheque myself! | | | Paypal not safe? | Jan 20, 2011 |

I wouldn´t use Paypal for more than a few euro ...
So, even if the fee is high, I definitely use wire transfer. In some cases I have used Moneybookers for small amounts. | | | keelin feeney Ireland Local time: 03:18 Member (2007) Spanish to English + ... Bank Transfer | Jan 20, 2011 |
I always use bank transfer and in some exceptional cases, PayPal. Bank transfer is better as there are little or no fees involved in the majority of my cases so far. I have never been offered a cheque here in Europe either.
