I am on facebook because my husband and sister suggested that several of their friends send me friend invitations, and then yelled at me for being antisocial when I did not respond quick enough:). I am also on linkedin through the ATA. I keep thinking there has to be a way to make this networking profitable, but I haven't figured it out yet. Is anyone doing anything useful with this site?

And, finally, even though ProZ is allegedly business networking, I spend plenty of time goofing off here. So do a lot of other people, if the fact that one of the most active recent discussions pertained to the view from our windows!

Well, Jan 14, 2009

I am on Orkut and Myspace, and sometime I use them to contact my friends. I use Skype and MSN only for my work. Msn and Skype I can contact directly my business while Orkut and Myspace, I can contact my friends sporadically and, not affect my business in a negative manner, never.

I only use Facebook and not that much. I'm a member of LinkedIn and have actually made some contacts that way.

As for MSN, SKYPE etc....those are just for work. I leave them on if anyone needs to contact me outside of email. I don't really find Facebook to be all that fascinating to the point where it would distract me from work.

Control Jan 14, 2009

Neil, I'm an IT guy by profession, so I have everything set up to not bother me by default. However, Facebook is something different I found... Mega-intrusive, with settings you cannot control, and ultimately VERY annoying and time-wasting...

I have a special email account for that sort of things, which I open only when I'm ready to spend some time on Facebook or reading other un- or less important mail/articles, etc.

LinkedIn Jan 14, 2009

Hi,
I'm not into "virtual" networking; I still like meeting and speaking to "real" people. However, I've often wondered about LinkedIn as it is a professional network. Does anyone have any positive experiences with it and is it good for making contacts in the sectors you work in (e.g. legal/medical/financial/media/etc.), even if it doesn't land you any direct work?
I'm curious and any information would be appreciated.

Good question!
Have a good day all, Aisha

Love those new words! Jan 14, 2009

I love these words, they're so creative!
Another recent favourite of mine is the verb "to wilf" as in What was I looking for. The experience we've surely all had of starting out searching for specific information and becoming distracted by links to other websites until you've totally lost the thread!

To come back to the question, I don't use any social networking sites at all.

Skype is an easy way to keep in touch with colleagues too Jan 14, 2009

I don't think of Skype as "social networking." For me, it's a tool I use for work, and for free or cheap phone calls. Social networks to me are things like Facebook, Orkut, MySpace and Twitter. I don't use them, except for a page on MySpace for my band, which I always forget to update.

I agree - Skype for me is an easy (and cheap) way of keeping in touch with colleagues as well - just this week I used Skype extensively for sending files back and forth to colleagues. I wonder how this service seems to be sometimes quicker than sending files by normal email! Besides, the calls one can make are practically free of charge.
As for other 'networking' sites I log on only when I wish to, so I can say that they affect my work adversely.
Regards,
Venkatesh

I am on ecademy, Linkedin and Xing and generate business through them. I have a customer that came in through ecademy. Today I had a request from a person that found my profile on Linkedin, and I am working on a translation that came in through Xing.

No! Jan 27, 2010

I cannot be bothered with it.
The only social network I use is Proz.com!
The other contacts are solely done with my normal email accounts.

definitely Jan 27, 2010

I'm a junkie. I even spend too much time at proz.com, not to mention places that are more fun

The only time I can actually make myself work without interruption is when I'm working on a per hour basis and I have to separate work time from distraction time.

On the positive side, taking little breaks from boring and/or monotonous work helps me stay sane.

Mostly it just takes me too much time for hello -- how'dyou'do -- so long with every buddy. Yet sometimes one can find really useful contacts there.
