Swedish term
det gröna
Swedish to English
Social Sciences
Government / Politics
young adult novel
"Det handlar hela tiden om att man föraktar någon annan. Att man känner sig bättre än någon annan. Viktigare. Ärligare. Eller något. Det svarta blocket är lite tuffare är det rödsvarta som är lite tuffare än det röda som er lite tuffare än det gröna. Hiphoparna föraktar hårdrockarna som föractar punkarna som föraktar alla. Det är ju bara… löjligt. Det är bara en lek."

Selected
the "green" group
Unless there is more context that I'm not seeing, I don't think these color terms have any specific reference here, and I think they should be translated literally with the colors in quotation marks to indicate the lack of specific reference (particularly with the phrase starting off with "the black group"!).

Given your further explanation, I'd go with "the Greens" (note capitalization) or "the environmentalists," or possibly even "the tree-huggers" if you think the rest of the text justifies that pejorative a term.

: The following may be relevant: Black = anarchists, Black/Red = Anarchist-socialists, Red = Communists (socialists), Green = Environmentalists

I'm not aware of the association of the color black with anarchism, but in that case those would make a better translation. You should propose this as an answer. Thanks!

: yea, I think that most Americans know who the Greens are - and they are not only environmentalists, but also anti-military

Thanks, Charles, that was my thinking as well. The Greens in the U.S. have gotten a lot of press during the last two presidential elections.

the environmentalists
Miljöpartiets people. They are the ones who cares about the planet, recycles, "hugs" (or actually ties themselves to trees) trees in protest of different political questions (only the very extreme, not everyone, in this group do these things)

the lefties
same reason as the commies. maybe this is too british thought for a us audience.

Clare Barnes
: Miljöpartiet are probably more left leaning than anything else, but being "green" does not necessarily equate with being on the political left.

Tim Kynerd
: Miljöpartiet aren't even particularly left-leaning. They're explicitly open to forming a coalition government with the right, for example.
