Swedish term

sluten adress

Swedish to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
A closed address? Secret address? Secure address? What precisely is this?

"UD:s fyra byggnader i regeringskvarteren var slutna adresser."

Discussion

Charlesp Jun 17, 2013:
Undisclosed locations Undisclosed locations. or undisclosed addresses, are not necessarily secret. There are photographs of them in the newspapers. But no confirmation is given (until perhaps some writes a memouir and confesses that their "undisclosed location" meant that they were at home).

As for the Pentagon refernce, its offices are undisclosed locations. The addresses (or room numbers) are not public -- even if you can find them on some Internet website.

And with the Pentagon, yea, fair comment. But you don't really know in what room they do what in the Pentagon. Have you ever taken the public tour?
Lene Johansen Jun 13, 2013:
Sluten means closed Just a guess here, but could this indicate that these buildings where not accessible to the public?

Restricted offices/buildings

These are off-limits types of places right?

agree Charlesp : Yes, but in this context, I think more than simply restricted. I mean, Rosenbad is restricted, but hardly a sluten adress. (Though if you asked anyone, including the police, where the "Rose bath" was, I don't think they would tell you.

And everyone knows where the Pentagon is, too! I do like 'undisclosed'. My logical problem is with the Swe text, that as soon as you disclose you have these addresses, anyone interested starts looking for where they are. Tough to translate!
neutral Anna Herbst : A restricted office does not need to have a "closed" or secret address.

Agree to this objection, but my logical problem is the Swe, as soon as you disclose you have these addresses, those interested start looking for where they are. One thing in wartime is not necessarily the same in peace time. So my generic suggestion!

closed address

A "closed" address is not made public for security reasons.
Example sentence:

...the aim of the "closed" address was to prevent the location /.../ from becoming known.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Charlesp : I really don't think that "closed" would be understood, even it is literally is what the word means. /// That was long ago, and even after reconsidering this, I have to ask, would "closed care" (a simular litteral translation) really be understood.

Please take a closer look at the reference. This concept was used during the war.//The text appears to be about the WW2 era, and, NB the difference in meaning of "sluten" in "sluten vård". Better to compare "sluten överläggning" = "closed deliberations".

undisclosed locations (secret addresses)

Considering that Google produces exactly one hit for slutna adresser</s>, I am thinking that this is a very closely held secret - even the term.

I would say "black addresses," although that very well is a possibilty. But I think these are secret addresses, i.e. "undisclosed locations."
Peer comment(s):

neutral Anna Herbst : Just another way of explaining what I said in my answer. However, "black address" means nothing to me.

"black address" isn't supposed to mean anything to you - it is a secret. (actually it is called something simular to "black address" -- but I didn't want to make this page a target for survelance, (if you know what I mean.)
agree Deane Goltermann : Will agree here, with the reservations I explained in my response above. 'Black' sounds cool, too!

disagree Charlesp : Sorry, but I don't think so; not in this context.

unlisted addresses

The bit of context your provided seems to indicate that the physical location of these buildings ARE known, but the addresses are just unlisted? They're not secret buildings in the immediate sense that you think of when you hear the word secret, they just don't have mailing addresses. I could be wrong
