As Ruth correctly pointed out, it certainly could be \"tied\" and she gave many fine examples to prove her point. In addition, it could certainly well be \"slur\" as the additional examples I have given show. Finally, as stated in the Oxford Dicitonary, with music, it can be either.

legato

Peer comment(s):

agree Lia Fail (X) : Italian for "tied." In music, the performance of notes in a smooth line. The opposite, with notes detached, is called staccato. (see Google define function)

Gracias, Ailish
neutral Refugio : Although a correct translation for ligada, it would sound odd to say "legato to the first note of the next measure." Legato in English is used as an adj. or an adv., but not as a the past participle of a verb.
49 mins
Saludos
disagree Deborah Workman : In this context, "tied" is correct, since it is talking about how the music is written and the rhythm achieved. Legato/stacatto treatment can be given to a line of music with/without tied notes.

tied

Hay dos tipos de ligaduras:

Ligadura
http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/averroes/recursos_informatico...

-----------------

Ties
A tie is a curved line which is used to connect notes of the same pitch. The resulting sound is that of a single tone with the duration value of the sum of the tied notes.
http://www.alcorn.edu/musictheory/theory1/ties.htm

--------------

A slur is a symbol in Western musical notation indicating that the notes it embraces are to be played legato (smoothly). In music for bowed string instruments, it indicates the notes should be played in one bow; in music for wind instruments, that the notes should be played in one breath. In vocal music, slurs are usually used to mark notes which are sung to a single syllable.
A slur is denoted with a curved line generally placed over the notes if the stems point downward, and under them if the stems point upwards.
The slur is not to be confused with two other similar musical symbols. The tie is a curved line that links two notes of the same pitch to show that their durations are to be added together. The ligature or phrase mark is a curved line that extends over a passage, indicating that the passage is to be interpreted as a single phrase.
