Sarah Webb (asker) Nov 2, 2015:
I don't know - that's why I asked in case there was another explanation. Maybe someone will post something, otherwise I'll put a note. Thanks for your input.
liz askew Nov 2, 2015:
what else could it be?
Sarah Webb (asker) Nov 2, 2015:
Thanks Liz - t crossed my mind too but it comes up 3 times! Do you think it could be something else?
liz askew Nov 2, 2015:
...en bifurcación de Bx..

must be a typo for Cx.

large ramus (intermedius) / intermediate artery

It's not a typo, or at least it doesn't have to be. Bx is an abbreviation for bisectriz, which is another name for the ramus or intermediate artery, present in about 15-30% of the population. It's when there's an extra branch at the bifurcation of the left main coronary artery, making it a trifurcation.

There are quite a few references out there, including, for example, this book, Guía MIR: Las claves de la preparación, where you would not expect to find a typo of Bx for Cx:
https://books.google.es/books?id=F6ahNLlttesC&pg=PA371&lpg=P...

"CX Arteria circunfleja
http://digibug.ugr.es/bitstream/10481/668/2/15474604.pdf.txt

http://www.webdelcorazon.com/index.php/inicio/29-isquemica/1...

"The ramus intermedius is a variant coronary artery resulting from trifurcation of the left main coronary artery 1. It is present in ~20% (range 15-30%) 2-3 of the population."

Some further corroboration of the use of the abbreviation:

The journal's own English translation uses "Int, intermediate branch" for this.

Bx can also mean biopsy, but I don't think that can be the meaning here. See this glossary (near end of p. 23):

And a penny has just dropped: in my first reference above (the Guía MIR) Bx does mean biopsy, so ignore that one please! Sorry.

agree Joseph Tein : Hi Charles, I think this is correct ... bravo. You don't find many examples of it, though, and I also found one site that abbreviates it as "Bz"

Hi Joe. Thanks a lot :-) I certainly didn't know this; I didn't even know there was such a thing! But you know how it is, sometimes it just doesn't smell like a typo.
agree lorenab23 : Bravo!!!
