Hi, I would appreciate any help in translating a sentence in a newspaper article titled "El anonimato de los soldados muertos" (about the war on Iraq). It says "la cifra de bajas de tropas roza los 3.500 desde que empezó la guerra". I'm unsure whether 'baja' just refers to deaths in this context or whether it can mean injury or even simply someone being discharged.The DRAE defines baja as "(Mil) pérdida o falta de un individuo" but the semantic range of a word like "falta" seems a bit ambiguous to me. Thank you very much!

Google this term and it will very sadly give you thousands of references. In terms of whether casualty means death or not, I cite the definition offered by http://www.army-technology.com/glossary/casualty.html: "casualty is a member of personnel unable to fulfil their duties within a military organisation due to death or incapacitation by injury or illness." However, this term is often used for death counts.
