to downplay
... tend to downplay grave/serious mistakes (or 'errors')
A literal translation just doesn't work here. IMO

In the U.S., this idiom is quite common, as is its related, two-word verb, 'play down' --- frequently used nowadays in the context of covid-19, as well.

Thanks, Phil. I think there may be question there of recreating a certain (idiomatic) effect produced by the somewhat non-standard usage of 'bajarle el perfil' (instead of 'restarle importancia', por ejemplo).

keep under the radar
Keep a low profile is usually for a person in my experience. Am wondering if this will do the trick instead.

minimize
In my opinion, the average Chilean culture tends to hide and minimize serious misconduct (we can see it at all levels, even in our governments and spheres of power).
en la línea de lo que indica Marcelo, mantener la expresión original no parece funcionar (de hecho, yo diría que esta expresión sólo se dice bien en el argot periodístico o político reciente de Chile)

to remain unnoticed
From the phrase I understood:
'Normally, people tend to remain quietly unnoticed, paying little attention to the problems, even among governments.'
Entiendo:
'Normalmente la gente tiende a quedarse quieta y deapercebida, prestando poca atención a los problemas, hasta entre gobiernos.'

Marcelo wrote that the media downplays important occurrences by not publicizing them on a widespread basis. I'm not in the same country and I don't know the facts.
ES: Escribió que los medios de comunicación minorizan la publicidad de algunos sucesos importantes. No estoy en el mismo país y no conozco los hechos.

: It's not about anyone remaining quietly unnoticed it's about Chilean culture deliberately ignoring things like corruption (in this person's opinion). Try reading it again & look at Marcelo's answer & consider if he is correct
