Spanish term

argumentativo

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language

The questions in question (estas preguntas) boil down to "do we need a tailored teaching strategy for each type of utterance or will one size fit all?". Not that that's much help in deciding how to translate argumentativo

Discussion

Paul I still think that argumentative carries the day even in teaching Spanish. Just look at us here! :-) and we all know Spanish.
David Ronder Dec 17, 2013:
I teach EAP (English for Academic Purposes) at a UK University and we do use 'argumentative' and 'discursive' for this kind of text that makes a case while considering counter-arguments. The English generally don't like to appear argumentative in its ordinary, non-technical sense, but Scots, the rest of the world etc. recognise that it can be a good thing. That's slightly irrelevant here, as what is required is right academic term. And what I do know is that 'persuasive' belongs more to the world of advertising and marketing.
MollyRose Dec 17, 2013:
What about "with plots"? Since an "argumento" is also a plot in a story.
Charles Davis Dec 17, 2013:
However Although I think I would therefore be prepared to use the expression "argumentative texts", despite the connotations of "argumentative", we can't necessarily assume that "argumentativos" covers precisely the same semantic field in Spanish. It may be that it is used to refer to all discursive writing, for example.
Charles Davis Dec 17, 2013:
Argumentative / persuasive / discursive I know what you mean about "argumentative", Paul. It does tend to suggest belligerent or truculent. But as far as I can tell, "argumentative writing" is a firmly entrenched expression in educational circles on both sides of the Atlantic.

It also seems that although the terms discursive, persuasive and argumentative are closely related in this context, they are not precisely synonymous, or at least they are often differentiated.

"Discursive Writing: This is the overall title for factual writing where you discuss ideas, express opinions and present evidence to justify your (or other peoples’) viewpoint.
Discursive writing includes:
- Argumentative: where you present a balanced view on the topic.
- Persuasive: where you take a side and persuade the reader of your opinion."

Paul Hirsh (asker) Dec 17, 2013:
In this case, Carlos, it's not about making up his mind, it's about teaching him Spanish!
Persuasive vs Argumentative The idea is to give the student enough information so he can make his own mind about the correctness of the subject matter. Forcing the student to think on his own help him sharpen his intellect and analytical skills perparing him better for the future.
Paul Hirsh (asker) Dec 17, 2013:
nice find, Joss!

Persuasive vs Argumentative texts Check out the difference, for example, here http://www.mesd.k12.or.us/si/Pennys_PortaPortal_Docs/Argumen...
Paul Hirsh (asker) Dec 17, 2013:
Liz seems to have found some interesting references. I'll go for persuasive on that basis.
Paul Hirsh (asker) Dec 17, 2013:
The reason I don't like argumentative is its pejorative sense in English. It describes someone you don't want to invite to dinner.

En Education argumentation forces the student to participate in a deeper way than just being informed. The purpose is to bring the student into the discussion so that he can get a better understanting of the matter being discussed.

agree Pablo Julián Davis : If I have to pick, would go with this one: more widely used in English. 'argumentative' is used too but not quite as much, and there is some interference from another sense of the word.

discursive

'textos argumentativos' are texts that discuss two or more arguments, hence the term 'discursive'.
