What is a contact hour?

A: The actual definition: "Contact Hour: A standard one hour (at least 50 minutes) classroom period. Contact hours, per se, will appear only in the Classroom Instruction activity category."

Effort reporting is required for faculty, adjuncts and GA’s, and this effort reporting is based on contact hours. But the definition of a contact hour is only for the teaching of organized course sections and not everybody teaches, and few people teach all the time. Since teaching is the main mission of the university, any activities that are not teaching are converted to something equivalent to teaching. Where the teaching of organized class sections is measured in contact hours, all other types of teaching and all other activities are converted into something like contact hours. Not surprisingly they are called Contact Hour Equivalencies.
