The nerve centre of the multitronic is the variator, comprising two sets of bevel wheels between which a link-plate chain is stretched. One of the two bevels moves axially and can be displaced by hydraulic pressure. This allows the transmission ratio to be varied between an infinite number of configurations depending on the driving situation – in other words, continuously.
