Discussion

PhilippID Mar 17, 2008:
You make me laugh, Andrew! Thanks!
Martin Wenzel Mar 17, 2008:
Very well, Andrew, I like people offering their two cents of criticism, because, as a rule, they don't come up with any suggestions!

Lancashireman Mar 17, 2008:
The AtA box is not the place to ‘set balls rolling’ or offer ‘my shot’ or ‘my two cents’. Nor, for that matter, is it the place for people like me to comment on such practice.
Martin Wenzel Mar 17, 2008:
Maybe you can say something like the natural/artificial self-image of the respective region. I am not suggesting it, just to get your ball rolling...

the actual and projected self-image

try this
Peer comment(s):

agree LP Schumacher : Projected! This is the word I was trying to come up with when I saw this question earlier! I would also consider using "identity" with this.

thanks
agree Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : Mit Liesl! Ich war mir nicht sicher, ob projected wirklich passt, aber wenn du als native speaker das verwendest... ;-)

thanks. Yes, its common to talk about someone projecting an image.
agree Hilary Davies Shelby : i like this (projected is perfect) but would also prefer "identity"

actual and projected identity (with Lichter) much better..

I do feel identity is the right word here though.
Peer comment(s):

agree NGK : lived and staged identity
