German term

repräs.

German to English Medical Medical (general) patholog.-anatomische Begutachtung/Makroskopie
Hi there everyone!

I'm translating a "Bericht über eine patholog.-anatomische Begutachtung m. kritischer Stellungnahme" and the paragraph titled "Makroskopie" ends with the following list:
A: Absetzungsrand Ureter, A. und V. renalis.
B: Cysten.
C: Herde.
D: Nierenparenchym repräs.

Thank you all in advance,
Efi

Discussion

Attila Szabo Oct 6, 2011:
It's like 'repräsentatives Gewebe'...representative/genuine/confirmed...I understand it this way...I just gave pointers to the asker.
SJLD Oct 6, 2011:
And what does that mean exactly?
Attila Szabo Oct 6, 2011:
That would be 'representative'...Google it a bit...
Efi Varvaropoulou (asker) Oct 6, 2011:
Hi! It's obvious that there are not many options as to the etymology of the word, I did however need a precise explanation of the term, in order to grasp the meaning.
Thanks again!!

representative (tissue) sample

In this case: a piece of cortical kidney tissue, big enough (representative of the entire organ) to allow for detailed (microscopical, histopathological or even molecular) analysis resulting in general pathological conclusions related to presence or absence of (parenchymatous) kidney disease (e.g. glomerulonephritis. mesangiosclerosis, malignant infiltration, diabetic nephropathy and more...).

This does not necessarily mean that the subsequent pathological finding is normal or unremarkable.
Example sentence:

Furthermore, DNA content, as analyzed by flow cytometry, shows heterogeneity in regard to ploidy in the same tumor (33). Therefore, to get a representative tissue sample, either a large sample or multiple samples from renal cell carcinoma should be exam

The surgical specimen should be transported quickly to pathology, and a representative tissue sample should be obtained under the supervision of a pathologist ...

Note from asker:
I think you're right. Trying to get the meaning, I was thinking of something along the lines of "repräsentativ für den Zustand des Organs" or "ein typischer Vertreter davon" and you have actually added the final touches and substantiated everything. I, too, think that it's not about being normal, seeing as in that case words such as "unauffällig" or even - plain and simple - "normal" would do the trick. I will revert with my grading!! Thanks again for your time!!
Peer comment(s):

agree Ioana Claudia Popa : I think the cysts and abscesses refer also to the kidneys, so I don't think the renal parenchyma can be regarded as normal, on contrary, the histopathological exam will prove the details of the macroscopic report, i.e. cysts and abscesses.

Example sentence:

...Bezug zu verschiedenen anatomischen Strukturen - Tumor repräsentativ (zentrale und periphere Anteile) - Normalgewebe repräsentativ...

Note from asker:
Thank you, Attila! As I mentioned above, I actually needed to verify why the obvious solution was suitable and now I have. Thanks for your time!!

German term (edited): repräs. (repräsentativ)

normal

'repräsentativ' conveys the idea of 'typical', which in turn prompts me to suggest 'normal' in the context of a macroscopic examination

Nierenparenchym repräs.
renal parenchyma normal
or
normal renal parenchyma
Note from asker:
Enormous thanks for your time, :-). Please see below for my final conclusion!!
