GKZ

German to English Law/Patents Law (general) Legal letter regarding the partition of an estate
These two acronyms have turned up in a legal letter I am translating (from an Austrian legal firm).

GKZ is by itself at the top of the letter followed by 1/10

GZ follows the details of the deceased and their place of residence and is followed by the format 1A 1/10a

My numbers are just for purpose of indicating format.

Does the GKZ refer to a file name? And is the GZ some sort of place code?

Geschäftsmann @ Phil G. So what do you, from your long Austrian pedigree, think the right answer is? I suspect Ellen, Brigitte and I (who have seen Geschäftszahl written out for the last 50 years) know.

OK, Brigitte - AT vs. DE Bundesland Let's not dictate - after Adolf H's 127th birthday - what the asker should use: which brings us back to the 'neutral' translation for Bundesland of Province in AT (conventionally used by Vienna Uni.) vs. Federal State in DE or, as one Englishwoman Solicitor-Partner in London - who had eaten too many Swiss chocolate rolls - once claimed at a talk, 'Regional Canton'.

But ... the text is not about the UK, it's about Austria. In my opinion, "municipality" is a neutral term which should be understood in the English speaking world. Okay, the UK does no longer use this expression but changed it to "district" (the Scots beg to differ) but I think the term "municipality" should still be understood, even in the UK.

Municipality strikes me as US/Canadian whereas the asker is in the UK where the term went out of use over 40 years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipality - much like misdemeanours and felonies UK translators still insist on using.

@ Adrian MM Admittedly, I'm in no position to contradict you. Since I find the context provided by the asker not very helpful, I did my own research and came to the result that "muncipality code" should be understood as a translation. I cannot say whether it is the most suitable one. :-)

I agree with Adrian ... as far as "GZ = Geschäftszahl" (reference number, file number) is concerned.
I would probably opt for "municipality code" to translate Gemeindekennziffer.

GKZ must be the place code.

GZ normally in AUT GZ is short for Geschäftszahl vs. -zeichen, though there is not much in it. I doubt it is the österr. Gemeindezeitung for the Todesanzeige.

Partition of an estate? - land is partitioned or consolidated. You mean 'assenting' the property to ('Einantwortung' > vesting in) the executors or court for administration and distribution.
