German term

Auflösen einer Grabstelle

German to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) cemetery
Correspondence between family members:

"Es ist mir nicht möglich, die Grabpflege zu übernehmen. Daher wollte ich, als ich in [city] war, die Grabstelle auflösen, konnte es aber nicht und kann es nicht, wenn Ihr als Miterben nicht Euren Verzicht auf die Grabstelle schriftlich erklärt."

The concept of "Auflösen einer Grabstelle" before the end of the lease doesn't apply here in the US and I don't know how to phrase this.

Can you help? Many thanks in advance!

Cancel a (burial/cemetary) plot lease

Just tell it like it is. Burial plots in Germany are often leased. This agreement can be cancelled.

Burial plot is of course a less specific term than cemetary plot. It depends on the context.

See the "Cemetaries Act" of Manitoba:

agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : yes, I know that from personal experience; normally One can lease them for 25 years, and if it is not renewed or taken care of (in my case, as I was abroad) it will gohave to be given up to "another tenant"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Both versions are perfect! Thank you, Paul and Tom! I went with Paul's suggestion as it is more descriptive in defining what this argument is about (the translation of this letter will be sent to a US law office). Many thanks to all!"

give up a burial plot

In Austria, there is an open-ended year-on-year licence fee chargeable to the next-of-kin who are automatically landed with the bill, whether or not - i.e. on intestacy - they are contract or testamentary parties to a hire

If the burial plot etc. is wound up, the plot can go to someone else after the tomb is cleared as directed, and cancels the chargeability of the predecessors.

Example sentence:

The family of Anna Nicole Smith contacted Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner days after her death to ask if he would give up his burial plot so they could bury ...
