German term

Authentifizierung und Vertraulichkeit

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers (general)
Specific context: Globaler Datenzugriff – Authentifizierung und Vertraulichkeit

I'm not sure how to translate "Vertraulichkeit" in this context. I'm wondering if it may be an integral part of the authentication process and can therefore be omitted??

authentication and privacy

In an IT/data processing context, you'll often find "privacy" used for "Vertraulichkeit" and/or "Datenschutz".

As to your further question re. \"...integral part of the authentication process\"; I don\'t think that you can safely omit the privacy part without compromising the meaning of the phrase. I\'d thus translate both terms.

agree Peter Linton (X) : Authentication definitely. For Vertraulichkeit, the Microsoft German glossary gives privacy, confidentiality or sensitivity as their official translations. Privacy, confidentiality mostly in Windows XP, sensitivity in MS Outloook.

agree Heidi Stone-Schaller : right on the button

agree Ken Cox : Authentication is the process or act of verifying that a party to a transation is geniune, and confidentialty or privacy relates to protecting information against unauthorised access. Both terms are significant here.

authentification

You are right. I would simply say "authentification".
But "authentification and confidentiality" would work equally fine.

A personal note:
I know that both authentification and authentication are used, at least in practice.

neutral Steffen Walter : It's "authenti*cation"... // ADD: The correct word formation is not subject to context - "authenti*fi*cation" is just a "contamination" of the correct English "authenti*cation". Also, the verb is "to authenticate" and NOT "to authentify".

there is too little context to be 100% sure.
neutral Kirsty Mason : I don't disagree with your answer, but I'd be careful to use authentication instead of authentification (which although it may be in common (incorrect) usage, is *not a word* in UK or US English dictionaries). *In any context.

neutral Textklick : Steffen's right: no authentification in the OED
